Chapter 4: Cracks in the High Society

While healing took root in the quiet conservatory, the outside world made its intrusive demands.

Liam Vance was not just a grieving father; he was the principal partner of *Vance & Sterling Urban Design*, one of the most prestigious architectural firms in the state. His late wife’s family, the affluent Van Der Bilt clan, maintained a powerful grip on the firm’s board of trustees.

On a cold Friday afternoon, Victoria Van Der Bilt—Liam’s former mother-in-law—arrived unannounced at his downtown office. Draped in an immaculate cashmere coat with pristine platinum jewelry, she sat across his desk with an air of aristocratic judgment.

""I hear you have enrolled Maya in a community music workshop run by an unknown instructor,"" Victoria said, her tone sharp and patronizing. ""A woman who doesn't even hold a tenure position at the conservatory.""

""Her name is Clara Moreau,"" Liam replied evenly, not looking up from the site plans he was annotating. ""And she has done more for Maya in four weeks than the clinical team you recommended did in two years.""

""Liam, be sensible,"" Victoria snapped, leaning forward. ""Maya is an heiress to the Van Der Bilt estate. She needs to be enrolled in St. Catherine’s Preparatory Academy next term. She needs structure, rigorous academic oversight, and social decorum—not sentimental guitar lessons in a drafty downtown loft.""

Liam set his drafting pen down. He looked at the woman who had spent the last three years treating his daughter like an emotional invalid to be shielded from public embarrassment.

""Maya is six years old, Victoria,"" Liam said, his voice dropping into a firm, unyielding tone. ""She doesn't need social decorum. She needs to know that she is loved, exactly as she is, whether she speaks or remains silent.""

""You are losing your grip on this family's priorities, Liam,"" Victoria warned, standing up with cold indignation. ""If you compromise Maya’s future with your sentimental indulgences, the family trust will take legal steps to review your guardianship.""

Liam stood up, meeting her gaze with an iron resolve she had never seen in him before. ""Try it, Victoria. You'll find that my daughter’s soul is not a portfolio asset.""
