Chapter 14: The Ring in the Cedar Box

On Christmas Eve, the city fell into a deep, peaceful stillness under a soft snowfall.
After Maya had fallen asleep in her room—surrounded by her drawings, her kalimba, and a newly gifted set of silver sleigh bells—Liam and Clara sat before the stone hearth in the living room of the Vance estate.
The fire crackled warmly, casting dancing amber shadows across the cedar floorboards.
Liam reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, handcrafted wooden box carved from red cedar.
He turned to Clara, his expression grounded in a deep, mature devotion that had been tested by fire and proven true.
""When Julianna passed,"" Liam spoke, his voice quiet and steady, ""I thought my ability to love died with her. I thought my only duty was to be a fortress for Maya—to keep the world out so nothing could hurt us again.""
He opened the cedar box. Inside rested a delicate gold band set with a radiant, pear-cut emerald that mirrored the green glass of the conservatory window.
""You didn't just teach my daughter how to sing, Clara,"" Liam said, his eyes misting with emotion. ""You taught me that a fortress is just a fancy word for a prison. You taught me how to live again.""
He knelt before her, holding the ring in his trembling hands.
""Will you share this life with us, Clara? Will you be our home?""
Clara looked at the man before her—the architect who had learned to build with love instead of stone. Tears of pure joy slipped down her cheeks as she reached out both of her hands, cradling his face.

""Yes, Liam,"" Clara whispered. ""A thousand times, yes.""
