Chapter 9: The Anatomy of a Soul

Diana looked at the envelope, then looked back at Julian.

""How is your mother?"" Diana asked gently.

Julian lowered his head, a single, bitter tear cutting through the dust on his cheek. ""She hasn't left the house in Greenwich for four months. She spends her days screaming at lawyers who won't take her calls because the retainers have run out. She still thinks this is a public relations campaign.""

""And your father?""

""Dad moved into a small apartment near the university in New Haven,"" Julian’s voice broke into a quiet, painful rasp. ""He’s teaching pro bono classes in corporate ethics. He told me... he told me he would visit me in prison every Sunday if I agreed to take full legal responsibility for my actions.""

Julian looked up, meeting Diana’s clear eyes for the first time in six months.

""I signed the federal plea agreement yesterday, Diana,"" Julian said, his voice trembling. ""Five years at the minimum-security facility in Otisville. I report on Monday.""

Diana felt a deep, solemn stillness settle over the porch. The retribution was complete, but in her heart, there was no triumphant victory—only the profound, tragic weight of a human life that had to be burned to the ground before it could learn how to be real.

""Why did you come here, Julian?"" Diana asked softly.

Julian wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

""I came because... that night on the stage, when you clicked that remote, I hated you,"" Julian choked out, falling to his knees on the gravel path. ""I thought you had destroyed my life. But sitting in those empty rooms for the last six months, looking at what I had become... I realized that you were the only person who ever truly loved me enough to stop me.""

He bowed his head, his shoulders shaking with quiet, long-overdue tears.

Diana walked down the steps, knelt in the gravel before him, and placed a gentle, steady hand on his trembling shoulder.

""Serve your time with dignity, Julian,"" Diana whispered. ""Learn how to work with your hands. And when you walk out of those gates, build something that doesn't need a lie to stand.""

Julian looked at her, saw the boundless, unconditioned mercy in her eyes, and nodded through his tears.

""Thank you, Diana,"" Julian whispered.

He stood up, took a deep breath of the clean mountain air, and walked back to his car, ready to face his judgment.
