Chapter 10: The Foundation of Bread

Over the next two years, the Willowbrook Guild became an engine of regional restoration.
Diana’s financial models helped establish thirty-two community food pantries, three rural health clinics, and an independent oversight board for municipal water conservation across five upstate counties.
Nathan had completed the barn’s restoration, transforming the upper loft into an open-access community design studio and the ground floor into a cooperative woodworking and blacksmithing workshop where local youths could learn traditional trades.
One sunny afternoon in June, Arthur Sterling’s car pulled into the driveway.
The old patriarch looked healthier, leaner, and remarkably peaceful. He wore a simple tweed jacket and linen trousers, carrying a wooden crate filled with vintage legal texts and historical drafting volumes.
Diana walked out to meet him, greeting him with a warm, loving embrace.
""Arthur,"" Diana smiled. ""You look wonderful.""
""The air is cleaner up here, Diana,"" Arthur said, his eyes twinkling as he looked around the bustling timber yard where local carpenters and students were assembling roof trusses. ""And the company is far more honest.""
They sat on the wide porch drinking iced cider, watching the swallows swoop over the creek.
""Julian wrote to me last week,"" Arthur said softly, pulling a handwritten letter from his pocket. ""He’s working in the prison greenhouse, managing the organic vegetable gardens for the regional food banks. He said... he said he never knew how good a tomato smelled until he grew it from a seed in the dirt.""
Diana smiled, tears of quiet joy shining in her eyes. ""He’s finding the earth, Arthur.""

""Thanks to you, my dear,"" Arthur replied, patting her hand. ""Thanks to you.""
