Chapter 3: The Broken Circle

Arthur Sterling did not wait for the dessert course.
The old patriarch walked to the front of the stage, took off his gold signet ring—the symbol of the Sterling dynasty for three generations—and placed it on the edge of the table.
He looked at Beatrice, whose painted face was now crumbling into frantic, desperate tears.
""Forty years, Beatrice,"" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a grief far heavier than anger. ""You told me the hospital expansion was delayed because of city zoning. You looked me in the eye every morning and let me believe our name stood for honor.""
""Arthur, please!"" Beatrice sobbed, reaching for his arm. ""I did it to protect Julian’s succession! The market was crashing! If Julian didn't show thirty percent quarterly growth, the board would have replaced him!""
""Then he should have been replaced,"" Arthur said coldly, pulling his sleeve from her grasp.
Arthur turned to Diana on the stage. The old man bowed his head slightly in a gesture of profound, sorrowful respect.
""Thank you, Diana,"" Arthur said. ""For not letting my life end in a lie.""
Arthur turned his back on the head table and walked down the central aisle of the ballroom, his footsteps echoing through the stunned silence as he exited into the rainy Manhattan night.
Diana switched off the microphone, placed the clicker on the podium, and walked down the back steps of the stage toward the service exit.
Julian ran after her, catching the heavy fire door before it closed.
""Diana, wait!"" Julian pleaded, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his hair falling into his eyes. ""We can settle this! We can transfer the assets back! Just tell the press it was an accounting misinterpretation!""
Diana stopped in the concrete hallway, turning to face him.

""The federal marshals received the encrypted files at six o'clock tonight, Julian,"" Diana said softly. ""There are no misinterpretations left. Start calling your criminal defense team.""
