Chapter 14: The Library in the Timber

Five years after the wedding, the Willowbrook Guild opened its new *Center for Civic Integrity and Craftsmanship*.
The building, designed by Diana and framed by Nathan, was a triumph of sustainable regional architecture: three stories of exposed timber trusses, passive solar glass walls, and geothermal radiant heat, housing a free public library of legal and financial records, a community drafting studio, and a vocational workshop.
On a bright Saturday morning, Diana stood in the central atrium, holding her four-year-old daughter, Clara, on her hip.
Little Clara pointed up at the massive central king-post truss, her brown eyes shining with wonder.
""Daddy made that big wooden star, Mommy?"" Clara asked.
Nathan walked over, wiping cedar shavings from his apron, and kissed his daughter’s cheek. ""Daddy and thirty of our neighbors made it together, sweetheart. So it will keep the books dry for a hundred years.""
Diana smiled, leaning her head against Nathan’s broad shoulder, watching twenty young apprentices assemble blueprints on the maple tables below.
A distinguished gentleman walked through the front doors, accompanied by a lean, tanned man carrying a wooden crate of freshly potted heirloom apple saplings.
It was Arthur and Julian.
Julian walked up the timber steps, set the crate down, and extended his hand to Nathan with a firm, respectful grip.
""These are heritage Northern Spy saplings from the greenhouse, Nathan,"" Julian said with a warm, genuine smile. ""They’ll bear fruit on the north pasture in three years.""
""They'll have good soil here, Julian,"" Nathan nodded with deep, quiet respect.
Julian turned to Diana, looking into her eyes with serene, untroubled gratitude.
""The building looks magnificent, Diana,"" Julian said softly.
May you like
""It was built on an honest foundation, Julian,"" Diana replied gently. ""Welcome to Willowbrook.""
