Chapter 8 - The Glass Shatters

The reinforced glass splintered inward with a deafening crash, showering the sterile floor of Room 104 with glittering shards of safety glass. Eleanor Kensington didn't scream. She didn't drop her tablet. She simply lowered the device slowly to her lap, turned her head toward the shattered doorway, and watched Marcus step into the room with a pistol leveled at her chest.

Clara gasped on the bed, her eyes flying open in sheer terror as she tried to sit up. "Marcus! No! Get out of here!"

"Shut up, Clara," Marcus said, his voice hard as iron, his focus split entirely between Eleanor and the doorway behind him where security alarms were beginning to wail with a piercing, high-pitched shriek.

Eleanor crossed her legs, a cold, unimpressed smile touching the corners of her thin lips. "You're a very foolish young man, Officer Vance. You traded a temporary suspension for a federal felony charge. Do you have any idea how long federal penitentiaries keep dirty cops in general population?"

"Get away from her," Marcus demanded, taking two measured steps forward, the black barrel of the 9mm locked dead on the center of Eleanor’s chest. "You falsified the contracts. You staged the break-in. And you had my wife abducted under a fraudulent medical warrant."

"Abducted?" Eleanor chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Look at the bedside monitor, Marcus. Look at the legal framework governing this facility. This is a private research hospital funded entirely by Kensington Industries. Clara signed every page of that surrogacy agreement voluntarily three years ago when her father was begging me to bail his failing shipping empire out of bankruptcy."

Clara clutched the white hospital blanket to her chest, tears streaming down her face as she shook her head frantically. "He didn't know, Marcus! Dad hid the terms from you! He said you were too honest, that you'd never agree to carry a corporate asset if you knew what the buyout clause entailed!"

Marcus felt a cold spike of betrayal pierce his chest. He looked at Clara, then back at Eleanor. "Is that true?"

Eleanor stood up slowly, smoothing down her cashmere sweater with deliberate calm. "Of course it's true. Clara’s father was a gambler who used his own daughter’s womb as collateral for a forty-million-dollar line of credit. When he died, the debt defaulted to me. This baby isn't yours, Marcus. Genetically, legally, and contractually, this child belongs to Kensington Bio-Tech."

"I don't give a damn about your contracts!" Marcus shouted, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "That's my wife, and whatever is growing inside her is human, not corporate property!"

Before Marcus could pull the trigger or grab Clara’s arm to pull her from the bed, the heavy metal doorframe behind him exploded inward. Three federal marshals in full tactical gear swarmed into the room, their assault rifles instantly trained on Marcus’s head.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now or we will open fire!" the lead marshal roared, his voice echoing off the tile walls.

Marcus stood frozen, the 9mm heavy in his hand. He looked at Clara, who was screaming his name as the marshals tackled him to the floor, driving his face hard against the cold, shattered glass.
