Chapter 13 - The Basement Vault

The subterranean vault beneath the Kensington Bio-Research facility was cold enough to frost the air with every breath. Rows of heavy steel filing cabinets stretched into the dim, amber-lit shadows, guarded only by the low hum of a massive server rack cooling system. Clara stood in the center of the concrete room, her white hospital gown damp and stained, her bare feet ice-cold against the floor. In her right hand, she clutched a small, ruggedized military-grade hard drive that she had just ripped from the primary terminal rack.
The digital timer on the vault door’s exterior keypad blinked in angry red numbers: 03:45 remaining until lockdown.
Eleanor Kensington had realized her decoy was discovered twenty minutes ago while her private jet was taxiing down the runway. The moment the pilot reported that the passenger on the medical gurney was an unconscious corporate secretary wearing a silicone mask, Eleanor’s private security detail had remotely sealed the basement vault, trapping Clara inside with a localized oxygen depletion protocol designed to erase all biological evidence in the event of a total system compromise.
The air in the room was already growing thin. Clara pressed her palm against the reinforced steel door, coughing slightly as the carbon dioxide levels began to rise.
"Marcus, please," she whispered into the small radio transmitter she had managed to smuggle out of the medical wing. "The security protocols are locking out all external overrides. If you don't bypass the main terminal on the ground floor, this vault is going to become my tomb."
Through the radio speaker, she heard the harsh, frantic sound of Marcus’s breathing. "I'm at the perimeter fence, Clara! I'm coming back in! Where is the manual override switch for the subterranean grid?"
"It's in the primary electrical substation behind boiler room three," Clara gasped, sliding down the cold steel door until she was sitting on the concrete floor, her brown hair falling across her face. "Marcus, listen to me... if Eleanor returns before you disable the grid, she'll kill you. Walk away. Take the files I left in our apartment and go."
"I am not walking away," Marcus’s voice roared through the static, filled with a terrifying, absolute resolve that brooked no argument. "I'm coming in through the steam tunnels. Do not close your eyes, Clara. Stay on the radio."
Clara gripped the ruggedized hard drive tighter against her chest, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks as she stared up at the blinking red lockdown timer. 02:12 remaining.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the vault shuddered violently from the outside, accompanied by the muffled sound of a high-voltage electrical explosion that shook the entire basement foundation.
