Chapter 3 - The Glowing Notification

The smartphone screen cast a pale, flickering blue light across Marcus’s face as he stared down at the incoming message. The sender was saved simply as 'E.K.'—Eleanor Kensington. The preview text read: 'The medical files are already uploaded to precinct internal affairs. Ask him why his badge number is flagged.'

Marcus stopped breathing. His thumb hovered over the locked screen. Precinct internal affairs? His badge number flagged? He looked from the phone down to Clara, whose eyes tracked his every micro-expression with mounting dread. She saw the shift in his posture, the sudden stiffness in his broad shoulders, and the way his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched near his temple.

"What did she send you?" Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway's ventilation system. "Marcus... give me the phone."

"Stay still, Clara. The paramedics are almost here," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of the warmth it had held just moments ago. It was the voice of Officer Vance, the dutiful cop dealing with a suspect, not a devoted husband protecting his pregnant wife.

"You're looking at it," Clara accused, tears spilling anew, carving clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "You're actually believing her over me. After everything we've built, after every shift you worked while I sat in this empty apartment waiting for you to come home alive, you let a text message from that monster turn you against me?"

"It’s not just a text message, Clara," Marcus said, standing up slowly, towering over her in the bright hallway. He felt sick to his stomach, the metallic taste of adrenaline coating his tongue. "My badge number is flagged. Eleanor just dropped a bomb into my career, and you're lying on the floor bleeding while talking about trust codes and hidden evidence. None of this makes sense. You lied to me about why Eleanor was here, didn't you?"

Clara winced, clutching her stomach as a fresh wave of pain hit her. "I didn't lie about why she was here! She broke in! She used a master key code to get through the penthouse deadbolt! She demanded the digital signature for the charity endowment fund so she could embezzle three million dollars earmarked for the pediatric ward!"

"Then why did she mention the birth certificate?" Marcus barked, his voice echoing sharply down the corridor. "Why did she say my child isn't mine?"

Before Clara could muster the breath to answer, the heavy security fire doors at the far end of the hallway burst open. Two emergency medical technicians rushed through, wheeling a gurney loaded with medical supplies, followed closely by a uniformed backup officer responding to Marcus's priority call.

"Clear the way!" the lead paramedic shouted, dropping to his knees beside Clara. "Sir, step back. Let us work."

Marcus stepped back mechanically, slipping Clara’s phone into his tactical trouser pocket. He watched as the EMTs carefully lifted Clara onto the gurney, her face contorted in agony as she locked eyes with him one last time.

"Marcus," she cried out as they began wheeling her toward the elevator. "Check the hidden compartment behind the living room bookshelf. The real file is there. She framed my father, and now she’s coming for us!"

Marcus stood frozen in the center of the brightly lit hallway, the spilled puddle of protein shake drying near his boots. The backup officer approached him, touching his shoulder tentatively.
