Chapter 14 - The Final Circuit

The electrical substation behind boiler room three was a labyrinth of humming transformers, exposed copper busbars, and thick high-voltage cables that hissed with raw, contained energy. Marcus kicked the metal access panel completely off its hinges, diving headfirst into the cramped enclosure with a heavy insulated maintenance wrench in his right hand.

The sparks flying from the blown transformer showered down on his shoulders like welding slag, scorching his tactical hoodie and filling the narrow corridor with the sharp, acidic smell of burning insulation.

"Marcus! The oxygen scrubbers just shut down completely!" Clara’s voice crackled over the radio, weak and breathy, punctuated by the sound of her coughing against the thinning air in the vault.

"I found the master busbar!" Marcus shouted over the deafening roar of the substation's cooling fans.

According to the schematic layout Detective Vance had texted to his phone just two minutes before his battery died, the subterranean vault’s lockdown protocol was tied directly to the main corporate grid. To release the vault door without triggering the self-destruct data wipe, Marcus had to manually bridge the primary live terminal with the neutral ground line using an uninsulated metal tool.

It was a textbook suicide play. One slip of the wrench, and fifty thousand volts of raw electricity would arc directly through his body, stopping his heart instantly.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He raised the iron wrench, locked his jaw, and swung it with all his remaining strength directly between the two exposed copper terminals.
