Chapter 1 - The Broken Trust

The brightly lit hallway of the corporate condominium felt less like a home and more like a sterile operating theater. The spilled puddle of dark liquid, a dropped protein shake, glistened near the baseboard next to Clara’s outstretched hand. Clara lay curled on the hardwood floor, her brown hair matted with sweat, her white top stained and damp. A sharp, rhythmic agony gripped her lower abdomen, leaving her breathless.
Eleanor stood over her, a formidable figure in a sharply tailored black suit. Eleanor’s face was twisted in a mask of cold desperation.
"Give me the trust code!" Eleanor shouted, her voice echoing off the neutral-toned walls.
"I don't know it," Clara gasped, her voice trembling with pain as she tried to crawl away from the towering woman.
"Don't lie to me!" Eleanor lunged forward, her manicured fingers aggressively grabbing Clara’s upper arm, digging nails into soft flesh. "The board meeting is in twenty minutes. If I don't transfer those assets, everything we built is gone. Give me the code right now!"
"Stop!" Clara cried out, her eyes welling with tears of pure terror. "You're hurting me!"
"Give me the trust code!" Eleanor repeated, shaking Clara's arm violently.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. Officer Marcus Vance sprinted into view, his dark blue police uniform rustling with his momentum. Without a second's hesitation, Marcus stepped aggressively between the two women, forcefully pushing Eleanor back by her chest. Eleanor stumbled, her heel catching on the edge of a Persian runner rug, nearly losing her balance.
Marcus glared at Eleanor, his chest heaving. "Get your hands off my wife!"
Clara clutched her stomach in deep distress, tears spilling over her cheeks as she looked up at her husband.
"She kicked me in the stomach!" Clara sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at Eleanor. "She told me to say I fell!"
Marcus’s jaw tightened. He pulled his shoulder-mounted radio microphone close to his mouth, his expression turning icy and intense.
"Operator," Marcus spoke into the radio, his voice sharp and controlled. "Send an ambulance and a forensic officer to the penthouse on 4th Street immediately. We have a domestic assault and a potential miscarriage."
Marcus clicked the radio off and turned back to Eleanor, stepping into her personal space. "You are not leaving this floor."
Eleanor brushed down her black suit jacket, her expression shifting from fury to a chilling, calculated calm. She looked past Marcus down at Clara with absolute disdain.

"You think a police report is going to protect you, Marcus?" Eleanor whispered, a dark smile playing on her lips. "Check your wife's phone. Ask her whose name is actually on the birth certificate."
