Chapter 8 - Darkness Below

The emergency backup generators kicked in three agonizing seconds later, bathing the wrecked nursery in a sickly, pulsating amber light. The explosion had blown out the main corridor wall, filling the air with thick, choking drywall dust. Eleanor coughed, securing the baby carrier tightly across her chest as Leo stirred, letting out a frightened wail in the dim, chaotic gloom.

"Keep moving, stay low!" Marcus yelled over the wailing alarm sirens that now pierced the estate.

He led the way into the narrow concrete service tunnel, his tactical flashlight cutting through the swirling dust. The walls were cold and damp, smelling of ancient stone and coastal salt. Every step echoed heavily against the low ceiling, amplifying the terrifying realization that they were descending directly into the bowels of the Vance family estate—right where Margaret’s darkest secrets were buried.

As they navigated a sharp turn in the subterranean corridor, the sound of muffled voices drifted up from a metal maintenance grate embedded in the floor beneath their feet. Eleanor froze, motioning for Marcus to halt.

She dropped to one knee, pressing her ear against the rusted iron grating. Below them, illuminated by the harsh glare of a laptop screen, stood Margaret Vance and her lead corporate attorney, Arthur Vance—her late husband's brother, who had helped bury the truth half a decade ago.

"The federal warrant is a bluff, Margaret," Arthur hissed, his face pale and slick with sweat as he frantically shredded physical documents into an industrial cross-cut shredder. "David doesn't have the hard copies. If we wipe the primary server, there's no legal proof linking us to the offshore accounts or the car tampering."

Margaret stood rigidly behind him, her gold satin dress torn at the hem and stained with dust, her face twisted into a mask of pure malice. "My son is a sentimental fool," Margaret spat, her voice dripping with venom. "He thinks he can destroy what I built? I built this dynasty over thirty years of blood and compromise. If he burns it down, I will bury him in the wreckage right beside his father."

Eleanor felt the breath leave her lungs. Above them in the dark tunnel, Marcus slowly unholstered his sidearm, meeting Eleanor’s terrified gaze with a grim, silent nod.

Just as Marcus reached for the latch of the maintenance grate to drop directly into the subterranean vault, a heavy steel security door slammed shut at the far end of the tunnel behind them, locking automatically with a definitive, mechanical click.
