Chapter 4 - Sirens in the Dark

The harsh red and blue lights swept rhythmically across the nursery wall, casting long, dancing shadows over the crib. Eleanor clutched Leo tightly against her chest, the damp fabric of his clothes pressing against her collarbone. Downstairs, the frantic pounding at the front door had given way to heavy, purposeful footsteps echoing up the grand staircase.

"David, what is happening?" Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the locked nursery door. "Are those the police?"

David turned away from the window, his expression hardening into a mask of cold resolve. He walked over to Eleanor, placing a comforting yet firm hand on her shoulder. "No, Amy. Not the police. At least, not yet. That's the forensic audit team I hired last month, accompanied by federal marshals. The timing is aggressive, but it was the only way to stop my mother from moving the offshore assets tonight."

Before Eleanor could absorb the staggering implication of his words, the heavy oak door shuddered under a polite but firm knock. A familiar voice called out from the hallway.

"Mr. Vance? Are you in there? We need your immediate authorization to secure the master study and the home server room."

David released a heavy sigh, leaning down to press a soft kiss onto his son's damp curls. "I need to go down there. Stay in this room, lock the door behind me, and don't open it for anyone except me. Understand?"

Eleanor nodded mutely, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She watched as David unlocked the door and stepped out into the hallway, pulling it shut behind him with a soft click. The sound of the lock turning felt less like protection and more like a prison gate sealing shut.

She turned back to the crib, tucking the lightweight cotton blanket around Leo, who had finally fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep. The quiet of the nursery contrasted sharply with the chaotic sounds of shouting, shuffling feet, and electronic equipment being powered up on the floor below.

Slowly, Eleanor walked over to the mahogany vanity table to set down a stray bottle of baby lotion. As her hand brushed against the surface, her fingers caught the edge of a hidden, sliding panel built into the antique wood—a secret compartment she had never noticed in the three years she had lived in this house. Curious and unnerved, she slid the panel open, revealing a thick stack of old bank statements and a handwritten letter addressed to David, bearing a chilling postmark from the night of his father's fatal accident.
