Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ledger

The yellowed paper crackled faintly under Eleanor’s trembling fingertips as she pulled the handwritten letter from the hidden compartment of the vanity. The date stamped at the top was from five years ago—the exact week David’s father had supposedly suffered a fatal heart attack while driving his vintage car along the coastal highway.

Eleanor’s eyes scanned the precise, elegant handwriting. It was Margaret’s script. Every sharp curve and aggressive slant of the ink spelled out a nightmare: instructions on how to alter brake fluid lines, demands for silence, and a chilling confirmation of a multi-million-dollar life insurance payout that had instantly rescued Vance Holdings from imminent bankruptcy.

"She didn't just break plates," Eleanor whispered to the empty room, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying puzzle pieces clicked into place. Margaret hadn't merely been a tyrant of high-society etiquette; she was a murderer who had eliminated her own husband to protect her empire.

Downstairs, the commotion seemed to amplify. A sharp, shattering crash echoed up the stairwell, followed by Margaret’s voice screaming in absolute, unadulterated fury—not the polite, icy tone of a society matriarch, but the feral shriek of a cornered animal.

"You have no jurisdiction here! This is Vance property!" Margaret’s voice reverberated through the ventilation shafts, carrying a desperate edge that sent chills down Eleanor’s spine.

Eleanor clutched the incriminating letter to her chest, the weight of the revelation threatening to crush her. If Margaret discovered that David was downstairs seizing the very servers where digital copies of these financial crimes were likely stored, her mother-in-law would stop at nothing to eliminate any remaining threats. And in Margaret’s twisted world, loose ends had a terrifying habit of disappearing permanently.

A sudden, rhythmic thudding echoed against the nursery door, making the heavy wood vibrate. It wasn't David's measured knock. It was heavier, faster, and accompanied by the frantic twisting of the brass handle.

"Mrs. Vance? Open up! It's an emergency!" a panicked voice shouted from the corridor, sounding remarkably like the family’s longtime butler, Thomas, whose loyalty had always belonged exclusively to Margaret.
