Chapter 12 - The Gilded Cage

The heavy steel doors of the patrol cruiser slammed shut with a final, hollow echo, cutting off Margaret Vance’s muffled protests from the backseat. Eleanor stood on the grand front portico of the estate, the cool autumn wind whipping through her blonde hair as she held Leo tightly in the baby carrier against her chest. Beside her, David watched in absolute silence as the tail lights of the police convoy vanished down the long, oak-lined driveway.
The morning sun was just beginning to crest the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and gray—the exact colors of the disastrous dinner party that felt like a lifetime ago. The crystal chandelier inside the dining room was no longer humming; the house was finally, profoundly quiet.
"It's over," David whispered, wrapping a protective arm around Eleanor’s shoulders, pulling her close against his side. "The forensic audit confirms every single offshore account has been frozen. The board has already voted to strip Mother of her voting shares. Vance Holdings will be restructured from the ground up, with integrity this time."
Eleanor leaned her head against his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The physical and emotional weight of the past twenty-four hours was staggering, but for the first time since she married into this dynasty, she felt a genuine sense of peace.
"She'll fight it, David," Eleanor murmured, looking down at the sleeping infant who had finally recovered from his terrifying fever. "People like Margaret don't just disappear quietly. Even behind bars, she'll find a way to pull strings."
"Let her try," David replied, his voice firm and resolute. "The system she built to protect herself is the exact prison that's going to hold her. We're free, Amy. You and Leo, and me. We can finally build a real life on our own terms."
Before Eleanor could answer, a sharp, urgent beep echoed from David’s encrypted smartphone in his coat pocket. He pulled it out, glancing down at the screen. The color drained instantly from his face, replacing his hard-earned relief with a sudden, terrifying pallor.
"What is it?" Eleanor asked, her heart dropping as she read the dread in his eyes.

David didn't speak for a second. He turned the phone screen toward her, revealing an encrypted alert from the county jail holding facility: Transfer transport intercepted three miles from perimeter. Primary prisoner unaccounted for.
