Chapter 8 - The Waterfront Ambush

The rusted corrugated metal of the rail yard warehouse groaned in the coastal wind, casting long, menacing shadows across the weed-choked tracks. Clara followed David through a rusted breach in the perimeter fence, her bare feet scraping against the gravel despite the makeshift cloth bandages she had tied around her ankles using strips from her torn hospital gown. The fog rolling off the harbor was thick enough to swallow the towering grain elevators and docked container ships, reducing the world to shades of gray and black.

"The contact said to meet them at Warehouse 4," David whispered, scanning the foggy expanse with his hand resting on his sidearm. "Stay behind me. If anything moves, drop flat between the rails."

"I have the baby, David. I can't just drop," Clara replied, her teeth chattering from the damp cold.

"Then you pray they miss us," David said grimly, leading her toward a sliding wooden door half-swallowed by ivy.

They slipped inside the cavernous interior of the abandoned warehouse. Rows of rusted shipping containers loomed overhead like monoliths, and the distant sound of waves slapping against concrete pilings echoed through the cavernous space. But there was no sign of their contact—only an unsettling, heavy silence that felt entirely unnatural.

David raised his hand, signaling Clara to stop. He sniffed the air, his brow furrowing. "Cordite," he muttered. "Someone fired a weapon in here recently."

Before Clara could process the warning, a blinding halogen floodlight mounted on a catwalk high above clicked on, bathing them in searing, inescapable illumination. From the shadows between the shipping containers, three men in tactical gear stepped out, automatic rifles raised and leveled directly at their chests.

At the center of the group stood Marcus Vance, adjusting his immaculate tie with a practiced, smug arrogance.

"Congratulations on the cardio workout, Clara," Marcus called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated tin roof. "Running through sewage drains with a newborn? Child Protective Services would have a field day with your parenting resume."

"Where is our contact?" David demanded, his voice steady as he positioned himself protectively in front of Clara.

"Oh, you mean the disreputable union hacker?" Marcus chuckled smoothly, snapping his fingers. Two guards dragged a battered, unconscious figure out from behind a stack of pallets and dropped him onto the concrete like a sack of garbage. It was a man Clara didn't recognize, bleeding heavily from a head wound. "He was very cooperative once we reminded him of the penalties for aiding federal fugitives."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked down at the infant sleeping peacefully against her chest, then back up at Marcus’s cold, smiling face.

"You can't win this, Marcus," Clara said, her voice carrying a cold, steely resonance that surprised even herself. "The flash drive David has contains the unedited recordings of Julian's father's murder."

Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his micro-expressions betraying a sudden, sharp jolt of genuine panic before he recovered his corporate mask.

"Hand over the flash drive and the child," Marcus commanded, stepping forward with his hand outstretched. "Or your baby takes his first and last breath right here in the fog."
