Chapter 5 - The Secret Archive

The freight elevator groaned down into the subterranean belly of the building, its manual iron gate clanking against the concrete wall with every floor they passed. Clara stood in the cramped, grease-stained cage, her eyes fixed on David’s scarred jawline and the Glock pistol tucked securely into his tactical holster. The air smelled of damp earth, old paper, and machine oil.
"Why are you helping me, David?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "Julian fired you. You lost everything because of him."
David kept his eyes fixed on the descending floor indicator, his expression hard as granite. "Julian didn't just fire me, Clara. He framed me for corporate espionage because I stumbled onto a ledger I was never supposed to see. That baby you're carrying? He's not just an heir to a fortune. He's an insurance policy."
Clara clutched the infant tighter. "What are you talking about? Julian wanted an heir to secure his grandfather's trust fund. That was the whole point of the marriage."
"The trust fund is a smokescreen," David said as the elevator jolted to a sudden halt, the ancient cables pinging in the darkness. He slid the iron gate open, revealing a damp concrete corridor lit by flickering fluorescent tubes. "Julian’s father didn't die of a heart attack three years ago. He was systematically poisoned, and the autopsy reports were buried under a mountain of non-disclosure agreements signed by corrupt board members. Your husband is liquidating the entire corporate portfolio to fund an offshore biotech venture—and he needed a child with clean genetic markers to bypass federal oversight on human trials."
The words hit Clara like physical blows. The cold, calculated cruelty of the man she had married wasn't just domestic abuse; it was part of a massive, sinister corporate conspiracy that reached into the highest tiers of government and medical research.
"Human trials?" Clara choked out, the horror freezing her veins. "He... he's using the baby for experiments?"
"Not yet. But once the birth certificate is legally finalized under their exclusive custody, you cease to exist on paper, and the child becomes a ghost asset," David explained, pulling a ring of master keys from his pocket and unlocking a heavy steel door at the end of the hall. "Welcome to the real underworld, Clara. This is where the Vance family keeps all the receipts they couldn't shred."
They stepped into a vast underground archive room lined with rows of filing cabinets, digital server racks humming softly in the chill, and boxes marked with classified corporate seals. David walked straight to a central terminal, punched in a rapid sequence of keystrokes, and a glowing monitor flickered to life.
On the screen was a detailed schematic of the hospital nursery floor where Clara had given birth just hours ago—and blinking red in the corner was a live surveillance feed of Julian standing inside the neonatal intensive care unit, whispering urgently into a phone while staring directly at an empty incubator.

"He knows you escaped," David said, pointing to the screen. "And he just activated a citywide bounty."
