Chapter 12 - The Cabin Siege

The wooden walls of the cottage trembled as heavy boots surrounded the perimeter, followed by the metallic click of tactical rifle safeties disengaging outside the windows. Clara clutched her son tighter against her chest, her heart hammering like a trapped bird against her ribs. David drew his sidearm, taking a tactical position beside the front door while Captain Thomas slid open a hidden floor panel beneath the rug, revealing a steep escape tunnel leading down to the water.
"They tracked the burner phone signal," David said, his voice dangerously calm as he checked the magazine of his Glock. "Thomas, get Clara and the baby down to the skiff. I'll hold the door as long as I can."
"I'm not leaving you here to die, David," Clara said, stepping forward with absolute defiance in her eyes. "We fight together or we don't go at all. I'm done running."
"Listen to me, Clara!" David barked, his eyes fierce. "If they take you, the files don't matter, the truth doesn't matter, and your son becomes Julian’s lab rat. Your only job right now is to keep that baby breathing."
Before Clara could argue further, the front window shattered inward in a shower of glass shards and splintered wood. A stun grenade came spinning across the floorboards, emitting a blinding white flash and a deafening screech that filled the room with acrid smoke.
Captain Thomas grabbed Clara by the arm, shoving her down into the escape hatch just as the heavy oak front door blew inward under the impact of a battering ram.
Gunfire erupted inside the cottage—sharp, deafening, and relentless. Shouts, breaking furniture, and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor echoed from above as Clara scrambled down the damp wooden ladder into the darkness of the underground tunnel, shielding the baby with her own body.
The water at the bottom of the escape tunnel was freezing, but Clara didn't hesitate. She waded forward into the pitch blackness, guided only by the sound of Captain Thomas splashing ahead of her toward the hidden cove where a small motorized skiff idled against the rocks.
They hauled themselves over the gunwale of the skiff just as a burst of automatic gunfire chipped away chunks of rock from the cave opening above them. Thomas slammed the throttle forward, and the small boat surged out into the open ocean under the cover of the dense coastal fog.
Clara looked back at the burning silhouette of the cottage against the cliffside, her chest heaving with adrenaline. She pulled out the single crumpled dollar bill from her pocket—the very same bill Julian had thrown at her in the hospital lobby—and held it tightly in her fist like a talisman.

They were bruised, hunted, and running out of safe harbors, but they were still breathing. And the encryption key on Thomas's flash drive had just finished downloading.
