Chapter 11 - The Amber Alert Traps

The glowing screen of the television mounted in the corner of the cottage broadcasted Clara’s face across every news channel in the tri-state area. The hospital security photo they had chosen made her look haggard, desperate, and terrifyingly guilty—the picture-book definition of an unstable mother on the run with a stolen child. Below her face, the bold banner screamed the fabricated charges: FUGITIVE MOTHER WANTED FOR EXTORTION AND KIDNAPPING.

"They've weaponized the media," Clara whispered, her hands shaking so violently she nearly spilled her coffee. "Everyone in the country now thinks I'm a criminal. If I step foot outside this cabin, even a grocery store clerk or a highway patrolman will turn me in."

Captain Thomas stood over the central wooden table where David had plugged the encrypted flash drive into an older, offline military-grade laptop. The screen flickered with streams of complex decryption code running in green text against a black background.

"It's a classic Vance playbook," Thomas said without looking up from the screen. "Control the narrative, buy the silence, and let the legal system grind down anyone who lacks the capital to fight back. Julian isn't just protecting his corporate interests; he's covering up a murder network that spans three continents."

"How long until you can break the encryption on those audio files?" David asked, leaning over the laptop shoulder-to-shoulder with the older captain.

"Twenty minutes," Thomas muttered, tapping a key. "The firewall is heavily encrypted, but Julian’s late father was notoriously lazy with his backup protocols. He used the same encryption key for his personal diary that he used for his offshore accounts."

Martha walked over from the wood stove, carrying the baby swaddled snugly in clean, warm flannel. She handed the infant back to Clara, who immediately pulled her son against her chest, burying her face in his soft hair as fresh, quiet tears of relief and exhaustion finally escaped her eyes. The baby gave a soft yawn, completely oblivious to the manhunt raging across the country in his name.

"You're going to beat them, Clara," Martha said gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Evil like Julian Vance always collapses under its own weight once the light hits the dark corners."

Suddenly, the generator outside stuttered and died, plunging the cottage into sudden, absolute darkness save for the flickering orange glow of the wood stove.

Thomas stiffened, reaching instantly for a shotgun leaning against the corner bookshelf. "That wasn't a power failure," he growled. "An EMP pulse just fried our local transformer grid."

Before anyone could move toward the door, the sharp, distinctive sound of armored vehicles crunching over the gravel driveway echoed through the quiet cove outside.

Through the front window, Clara watched in horror as three black SUVs with blacked-out windows and roof-mounted spotlights surrounded the cabin, their high beams pinning the wooden cottage like a deer in headlights.

A metallic voice blared through a megaphone from the lead vehicle: Clara Vance. Step out with the child immediately. Resistance is futile.
