Chapter 10 - The Safe Harbor

The fishing boat bounced over the choppy harbor swells, throwing up cold spray that soaked Clara’s face and hair. She sat huddled on a wooden bench inside the cramped, salt-stained cabin, unwrapping the damp thermal blanket to check the baby. The infant was still warm, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, reassuring rhythm. The sheer resilience of her son in the face of such relentless chaos gave Clara a fierce, unbreakable anchor of hope.

David stood at the helm, steering the vessel away from the shipping lanes and toward a secluded cluster of weathered fishing shacks tucked into a rocky cove miles north of the city.

"Who owns this boat?" Clara asked, her voice raspy from the salt air and smoke.

"An old mentor of mine," David replied without turning his head away from the compass. "A retired Coast Guard investigator who spent thirty years trying to nail the Vance shipping cartel before they retired him with a forced pension. If anyone can keep us hidden long enough to decrypt those files and contact the right federal prosecutors, it's Captain Thomas."

The boat slowed, its engine dropping to a quiet idle as they glided into a hidden inlet sheltered by towering granite cliffs. A single yellow light burned from the porch of a weathered wooden cottage perched on stilts above the water. An elderly man with a thick white beard and a weather-beaten waterproof jacket stood on the dock, holding a heavy mooring line ready to catch their bow.

As soon as the boat bumped against the rubber tires lining the pilings, Captain Thomas secured the line with practiced efficiency and stepped aboard. His sharp, intelligent eyes swept over Clara, the newborn baby, and David’s tactical gear, taking in the entire situation without a single wasted word of panic.

"Looks like you kicked a hornet's nest this time, David," Thomas said, his voice deep and gravelly like grinding stones. "Julian Vance has half the state police and every corporate bounty hunter between here and the capital looking for a woman with a newborn and a dollar bill."

"They know about the flash drive, Thomas," David said, handing the small device over. "And they're willing to burn down half the city to get it back."

Thomas pocketed the drive, nodding grimly. "Then we don't have much time. Come inside before hypothermia finishes what Julian started."

The interior of the cottage was warm, smelling of cedarwood, coffee, and old paper. Thomas’s wife, a kind-eyed woman named Martha, immediately took the baby from Clara’s stiff arms with gentle, practiced efficiency, wrapping the infant in dry, warmed flannel blankets and whisking him toward a roaring wood stove.

Clara collapsed into a comfortable armchair near the fire, her entire body shaking from delayed shock and exhaustion. Martha handed her a mug of hot black coffee laced with honey.

"Drink it," Martha instructed softly, sitting on the arm of the chair. "You're safe here, child. For tonight, at least."

Clara took a small sip, feeling the warmth spread through her chest. But as she looked out the grease-stained window at the dark ocean outside, her phone buzzed on the wooden side table, flashing a live news alert that froze the blood in her veins.
