Chapter 9: The Safe Haven

At 11:00 AM, a private luxury van pulled up to 4B Elm Street. Julian’s head of security, Marcus, personally escorted Elena and Mrs. Gable downstairs.

Elena carried Mia in a warm fleece carrier, while Marcus’s team loaded their modest belongings into the rear of the vehicle.

“Where are we going?” Elena asked, looking out the tinted window as the van left the bleak neighborhood behind.

“Mr. Sterling insisted you relocate immediately,” Marcus explained, checking his rearview mirrors with trained vigilance. “He is fully aware that Richard Vance was released on temporary bail two hours ago.”

Elena felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. “Richard is out? But the police had the ledgers!”

“His associates have deep pockets,” Marcus said calmly. “However, Mr. Sterling anticipates every move his opponents make. You and Mia will be staying at the Oak Ridge estate under 24-hour private security until the trial concludes.”

The van turned into a quiet, tree-lined avenue nestled against the hills. Large, elegant stone townhouses sat behind wrought-iron gates, surrounded by towering oak trees dusted with snow.

The vehicle stopped before a beautiful two-story brick home with large bay windows, a private garden, and a wide front porch.

When the front door opened, Julian stood in the foyer, holding a set of brass keys.

“Welcome home, Elena,” Julian said, offering a warm, genuine smile.

Elena walked inside, stunned. The living room was bathed in soft sunlight, featuring hardwood floors, a crackling stone fireplace, and a fully furnished nursery visible just down the hall.

“Julian, this is… it’s a palace,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling. “How can I ever repay this?”

“You already did,” Julian said quietly. “By being an honest mother who refused to break, even when the world gave you every reason to give up.”

Suddenly, Marcus’s radio chirped with a burst of static.
