Chapter 3: The King Unmasked

“Mr. Sterling…” Richard stammered, his voice dropping an octave as pure dread gripped him. “I had no idea you were visiting tonight. The regional office didn’t inform us—”

“Because I prefer unannounced inspections,” Julian said calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. “I find that planned visits only show me carefully constructed illusions. Tonight, however, I saw the truth.”

Elena sat frozen on the floor. She had heard of Julian Sterling—the reclusive billionaire philanthropist whose real estate developments dominated the skyline. Rumors painted him as ruthless in the boardroom, yet here he stood, shielding a broke dishwasher from a tyrannical boss.

Julian turned to Elena, his cold expression softening into genuine empathy. He extended a strong, steady hand. “Please, ma'am. Stand up. No honest worker kneels in a building that bears my name.”

Elena took his hand. His grip was warm and reassuring as he pulled her effortlessly to her feet. She clutched her battered bag to her chest, her knuckles white.

Julian turned back to Richard. “Three hundred dollars. That was the price you put on a human being’s dignity tonight. You withheld her earnings, knowing she had an infant at home in freezing temperatures.”

“Sir, it was a managerial dispute!” Richard argued, his hands shaking as he adjusted his collar. “She was insubordinate. In high-end hospitality, discipline must be absolute!”

“Discipline is not theft, Richard,” Julian replied, his voice chilling the air. “You didn't just short Elena. Looking at these carbon copies, you’ve skimmed nearly forty percent of the hourly payroll across forty line cooks, dishwashers, and busboys every month.”

Julian pulled a sleek smartphone from his breast pocket and tapped the screen once. “Marcus. Bring the audit team up to the main floor. Now.”

Within seconds, the restaurant’s front doors opened. Three men in dark suits carrying black leather briefcases entered, followed by two uniformed city police officers. Richard’s knees visibly buckled.
