Chapter 14: Echoes of the Past

That evening, after Mia was tucked into bed, Elena and Julian walked through the peaceful garden behind the townhouse. The summer air was filled with the scent of jasmine and fresh grass, fireflies dancing in the twilight.
“I have to ask you something, Julian,” Elena said, looking up at the stars. “That night at the restaurant… when you stepped in… did you know who I was before you looked in my bag?”
Julian paused beside a stone fountain, watching the water ripple under the moonlight.
“No,” Julian answered honestly. “I had no idea you were Thomas’s wife.”
Elena looked at him, surprised. “Then why did you stand up for me? Richard had security, the restaurant was full of powerful people, and you had nothing to gain by causing a scene.”
Julian placed his hands in his pockets, his gaze distant yet serene.
“My father grew up in the tenements of Chicago,” Julian said quietly. “He worked as a night janitor to put food on our table. I watched store owners and building managers treat him like he was invisible—or worse, like he was a nuisance because his hands were dirty.”
He turned to look at Elena. “When my father died, I swore that no matter how much wealth or influence I acquired, I would never allow a bully in a designer suit to humiliate an honest worker in my presence. When Richard kicked your bag and sneered at your tears, I didn't see an employee. I saw my father. I saw every decent person who ever had their dignity stolen by an arrogant coward.”
Elena reached out, placing her hand gently on his arm. “Your father would be incredibly proud of the man you became.”

Julian smiled, a deep, genuine warmth reaching his eyes. “Thank you, Elena.”
