Chapter 7: The Unseen Connection
The next morning, sunlight reflected brightly off the fresh blanket of snow covering Elm Street. Elena woke to the sound of soft cooing from the crib. She leaped up, her heart pounding, only to find Mia sitting up, chewing happily on the edge of her blanket, her cheeks a healthy, rosy pink. Her fever had completely broken.
A knock sounded at the door.
Elena opened it to find a courier holding a sleek leather briefcase and a warm coffee carrier containing two lattes and fresh pastries.
“Elena Miller?” the courier asked professionally.
“Yes?”
“From Mr. Sterling,” the man said, handing over the items before tipping his hat and walking down the stairs.
Elena brought the briefcase to the kitchen table. Inside, atop a stack of notarized legal files, lay an envelope addressed to her in crisp, elegant handwriting.
She opened the letter:
> *Elena,*
> *Three years ago, the Sterling Tower downtown suffered a catastrophic basement transformer fire during its final phase of construction. Over forty workers were trapped in the lower sublevels.*
> *A crew from Engine Company 4 entered that smoke-filled basement four times to pull survivors out. The captain leading that squad made sure every single construction worker made it out alive before the support beams gave way.*
> *That captain was Thomas Miller.*
> *I never had the chance to thank the man who saved my workers and protected my life's work. It turns out, fate brought his family to my table last night.*
> *The survivor benefits have been fully processed and deposited into your account as of 8:00 AM today, alongside all back wages stolen by Richard Vance. Furthermore, you will find legal documents assigning you full ownership of a family townhouse on Oak Ridge Lane.*
> *You and Mia will never have to worry about cold nights or stolen wages again.*

Elena dropped the letter onto the table, covering her face with her hands. Tears streamed freely down her cheeks, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming, uncontainable joy.
