Chapter 7 - The Maintenance Shaft

The heavy storage closet door swung open, revealing shelves stacked with old textbooks, reams of construction paper, and spare janitorial supplies.

"Get in, move!" Frank urged, waving his hand frantically for Evan and Mrs. Gable to slip past the threshold.

Mrs. Gable scrambled inside without hesitation, pulling Evan tightly behind her into the cramped, dark space. The air smelled strongly of pine floor cleaner and dust. "Frank, what are you doing? Come inside with us!"

"If I go in there, they trap us in a dead end," Frank replied firmly. He reached back and pulled a stack of heavy metal shelving units across the open closet door, concealing the entrance completely from anyone scanning the main room. "There's an old service shaft behind the bottom shelf. It leads down to the old boiler rooms beneath the foundation. Use it."

Before Mrs. Gable could argue, the heavy oak door of Room 4B shuddered under a massive, synchronized impact from the hallway.

Bam! Bam!

The wooden frame splintered loudly as someone applied a heavy hydraulic breaching tool to the deadbolt Frank had installed minutes earlier. The desk jammed underneath the handle groaned, wood splitting under the incredible pressure.

"Frank!" Mrs. Gable hissed through the gap in the shelving units.

"Go! Now!" Frank roared, swinging his heavy steel flashlight as he backed away from the barricade, bracing himself for the door to give way.

In the cramped darkness of the closet, Evan felt along the wooden baseboards until his fingers brushed against a cold, iron ring set flush into the floorboards. "Here! I found it!" he whispered urgently.

Working together with trembling hands, Evan and Mrs. Gable hauled upward on the heavy iron ring. With a rusty, agonizing groan, a square section of the floor lifted open, revealing a steep, vertical metal ladder disappearing into absolute darkness below. A rush of cool, damp air surged upward from the subterranean depths.

"You first, Evan," Mrs. Gable said, pushing the boy gently toward the drop.

Evan didn't hesitate. He grabbed the cold rungs of the ladder and began to climb down into the black void, his sneakers finding purchase on the slick rungs. Mrs. Gable followed closely behind him, her maroon shirt snagging on a protruding splinter of wood as she lowered herself into the shaft.

Above them, with a deafening crash of splintering wood and shattered glass, the classroom door finally gave way.

Heavy tactical boots stomped onto the hardwood floor of Room 4B, accompanied by the cold, metallic clatter of automatic rifles being readied.

"Sector 4B is breached!" a gruff, mechanical voice echoed from the classroom just above the open hatch. "Clear the perimeter! Find the asset!"
