Chapter 3 - Footsteps in the Hall

The heavy footsteps outside Room 4B slowed to a deliberate halt right outside the frosted glass door panel.
Inside the dim classroom, the silence grew suffocating. Mrs. Gable pressed her hand tightly against her mouth, trying to muffle the sound of her own ragged breathing. Evan huddled deeper into his hoodie, pulling the fabric up over his nose, his wide eyes glued to the doorknob.
Frank didn't move an inch. He stood braced against the adjacent wall, his right hand gripping the steel flashlight tightly, his eyes narrowed into slits as he watched the shadow cast under the door frame. Someone was standing out there in the corridor, perfectly still, listening for any sign of life.
The security alarm continued its rhythmic, low-frequency wail in the distance, but right outside the room, the quiet was absolute.
Slowly, the brass door handle began to turn. It rotated downward with a faint, metallic click, pausing halfway as if the person on the other side was testing the latch.
Frank let out a low breath through his nose, shifting his weight onto his back foot. He raised the heavy flashlight, preparing to strike the moment the door pushed inward.
Instead of opening, the doorknob slowly returned to its horizontal position with a dull snap. The footsteps resumed, moving away down the hallway with a heavy, unhurried cadence that faded into the distance.
Mrs. Gable exhaled a shuddering sigh of relief, her knees buckling slightly before she caught herself against the edge of the teacher's podium. "Wh-who was that?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Was it administration? Security?"
"Security doesn't wear heavy work boots with custom steel-toe treads," Frank replied quietly, lowering his flashlight just a fraction. He stepped back toward the AV rack, his boots crunching slightly on the dried coffee stain. "That was someone who knew exactly where those cables led. And judging by the fact that our local alarm didn't scare them off, they weren't worried about being caught by the campus cops."
Evan slid out from behind his desk, his small sneakers squeaking softly on the floor. "Mr. Frank, look." He pointed a trembling finger toward the exposed wall panel where Frank had cut the wires.
Frank knelt beside the boy again, squinting into the dark cavity behind the drywall. Propped against the interior brick foundation was a small, high-capacity digital storage drive, connected to a battery pack and a blinking green transceiver. A tiny label was taped to the side of the housing, handwritten in black ink with a sequence of alphanumeric characters: SECTOR_4B_LIVE.
"It's an independent relay loop," Frank muttered under his breath, carefully pulling the device free from the wall. "It wasn't just recording audio and video for the school board. It was streaming outward. Someone external was tapping into our local network routing."
Evan reached out, his small hand brushing against the edge of the drive. "My dad said people can hack anything if they have the right password."

Frank looked down at the boy, a deep frown carving lines into his weathered forehead. He opened his mouth to reply, but before a single word could escape, the small digital drive in his hand emitted a sharp, high-pitched electronic beep, and the tiny green LED shifted instantly to a blinding, solid red.
