Chapter 1 - The Mechanical Illusion

The air inside Room 4B smelled of old chalk dust, floor wax, and the metallic tang of fear.

"Stop making up stories, Evan! Desks do not move by themselves!" Mrs. Gable shouted, her voice cutting through the silent afternoon like a jagged razor blade.

She stood at the front of the classroom, her middle-aged face locked into a severe and stern expression. Her hair was pulled back into a tight, severe bun that emphasized the angry veins throbbing at her temples.

Evan, a small boy wearing a gray and black hoodie with matching blue jeans, shrank back into his chair. His eyes were wide, darting from the trembling wooden desk in front of him to the glaring educator.

"I'm not making it up, Mrs. Gable!" Evan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and frustration. "I swear I saw it slide across the floor on its own! Something is pulling it from underneath!"

"Enough of these childish lies, Evan!" Mrs. Gable snapped, slamming her heavy textbook onto the podium. "You just want attention, and you are disrupting this entire academic environment with your wild imagination!"

Before Evan could reply, the heavy classroom door swung open with a slow, ominous creak. A large man wearing a thick brown jacket, a worn cap, and a heavy tool belt stepped inside. It was Frank, the head facility technician, whose calloused hands had maintained the aging school building for decades. Without a word of greeting, Frank knelt hard onto the wooden floor panels. He pulled a heavy-duty flashlight from his belt, clicked it on, and began inspecting a series of subtle, freshly cut seams running directly beneath the row of student desks.

Mrs. Gable crossed her arms, glaring down at the intruder. "Frank, what on earth do you think you're doing? Class is still in session, and we don't need maintenance interrupting us with unnecessary noise."

Frank didn't look up. His face was grim, illuminated by the harsh white beam of his flashlight as he traced a hidden mechanized track system embedded deep within the subflooring. "You might want to quiet down, Martha," Frank muttered, his voice dangerously low. "The boy wasn't lying."

Mrs. Gable scoffed, lifting her ceramic coffee cup to her lips to take a calming sip. "That's absurd. Frank, you're encouraging his delusions—"

Her words stopped dead in her throat. She stared down at the floorboards, her eyes widening with absolute shock as a faint, rhythmic mechanical grinding sound echoed from beneath the wood. Her grip on her coffee cup loosened instantly.

Before she could scream, the cup slipped from her fingers and shattered against the floor, spilling hot dark coffee across the tiles in a spreading pool of terror. At that exact moment, Frank reached into an open AV equipment rack against the back wall, violently yanking out a tangled bundle of black cables that revealed a sprawling, hidden surveillance setup.

Frank stood up instantly, stepping next to Evan and speaking with desperate urgency into his two-way radio. "Lock down this building right now! Someone has a live feed of these kids!"
