Chapter 6 - The Tactical Perimeter

The matte-black figures in the courtyard stood motionless, an eerie silhouette against the fading daylight.
"Get down!" Frank yelled, lunging forward and sweeping Evan off his feet just as a dull, suppressed thunk echoed against the outside of the windowpane.
A microscopic spiderweb of fractures instantly bloomed across the thick ballistic glass, centered on a tiny point where a rubber-tipped surveillance dart had struck the frame. The window held, but the message was unmistakable. They were being targeted by professionals who had absolute control over the exterior grounds.
Mrs. Gable screamed, dropping to her hands and knees beside Evan and pulling the boy tightly against her chest. "Who are they? What do they want with a nine-year-old child?" she cried, tears finally spilling down her pale cheeks.
Frank stayed low, crawling toward the heavy metal filing cabinet near the teacher's desk. He braced his boots against the base and hauled the heavy piece of furniture over, sliding it flush against the cracked window to block any line of sight from the courtyard below.
"It's not about his age, Martha," Frank said, breathing heavily as sweat beaded on his forehead. He unzipped a small utility pouch on his tool belt and pulled out a battered, analog pocket radio—a relic from the nineties that used old-school VHF frequencies immune to modern digital EMP sweeps. He extended the metal antenna fully. "It's about what Evan built for the district science fair last month. That encrypted quantum-routing algorithm he coded from scratch."
Evan blinked through his tears, looking up from Mrs. Gable's protective embrace. "How... how do you know about that? I only showed it to Principal Harris and the judges."
"Principal Harris retired early last week, kid," Frank muttered, spinning the tuning dial of the analog radio until static gave way to a faint, rhythmic burst of scrambled audio data. "And the judges weren't academics. They were defense contractors scouting for algorithmic talent. Your little network optimization project? It can bypass military firewall encryption in under three seconds."
Mrs. Gable stared at the boy in stunned silence. "Evan... you coded a military-grade bypass into a school project?"
"I just wanted to make the school Wi-Fi faster so the computers wouldn't lag during typing class!" Evan protested, his voice cracking with fear and innocence. "I swear I didn't hack anything important!"
"Intention doesn't matter to men in black tactical gear," Frank interrupted sharply, his ear pressed tightly against the small speaker of the VHF radio. The static cleared for a brief second, revealing a snippet of a live voice transmission intercepting the local channel: Target confirmed in Sector 4B. Secure the asset, eliminate collateral witnesses if necessary.
Frank's face went completely pale. He clicked the radio off with a sharp snap.

"We don't have much time," Frank whispered, crawling swiftly toward the classroom's back emergency storage closet. He grabbed the heavy brass padlock hanging on the latch and wrenched it with his bare hands, using a steel pry bar from his belt to snap the staple clean off the door frame. "Get inside, both of you. Now."
