Chapter 11 - The Thermal Breach

The bright blue arc of the industrial cutting torch showered a spray of white-hot sparks across the concrete floor inside the bunker.
"Get back against the far wall, now!" Frank shouted, shoving Evan and Mrs. Gable into the deepest corner of the fallout shelter away from the scorching metal door.
The heat radiating from the heavy steel barrier was rising rapidly, turning the cramped room into a stifling sauna. The air grew thick with the acrid scent of burning industrial sealant and superheated iron.
Whirrrrrr.
The sound of the high-powered plasma torch grew louder, whining as it sliced effortlessly through the upper locking hinge of the massive vault door. A heavy cloud of gray smoke began to curl inward through the expanding gap at the top.
Mrs. Gable wrapped her arms around Evan, shielding the boy's face against her maroon shirt as she squeezed her eyes shut, whispering a silent prayer.
Frank gripped his heavy iron wrench, positioning himself directly beside the burning door, his massive frame coiled like a spring ready to release. He knew as soon as the hinges gave way, the tactical operators would flash-bang the room before entering.
With a final, ear-splitting groan of tearing metal, the upper portion of the massive steel door gave way, tipping inward with a deafening crash that shook dust and concrete chips from the ceiling.
Before the smoke could even begin to clear, a cylindrical metal canister came rolling through the breached opening, clattering across the floor.
"Flash-bang! Cover your eyes and ears!" Frank roared, lunging forward with incredible speed.
Instead of diving away, Frank kicked the smoking canister directly back out through the breached opening just as it detonated. A blinding flash of white light and a concussive boom echoed violently from the hallway outside, accompanied by muffled shouts of surprise from the tactical operators caught in their own blast radius.
"Now! Move!" Frank yelled, grabbing Mrs. Gable by the arm and dragging her toward the breached doorway, pushing Evan ahead of them.
They scrambled through the smoking, superheated gap in the vault door, emerging back into the dim concrete utility corridor. To their left, two black-clad tactical operators were stumbling backward, hands over their ears as they tried to recover from the unexpected detonation of their own flash grenade.
"Run! Don't look back!" Frank barked, leading the charge down a branching maintenance tunnel that led deeper into the subterranean foundations beneath the school's athletic complex.
They sprinted through the damp corridors, their footsteps splashing through puddles of standing water, the distant shouts of recovering operatives fading behind them.

After what felt like an eternity of running through the labyrinthine pipes and wiring conduits, Frank abruptly pushed open a rusted metal access hatch set into the base of a concrete retaining wall, leading out into the cool, open night air.
