Chapter 7

Across town in a quiet, nondescript apartment far removed from the glittering towers of Manhattan, Mia sat on the edge of a narrow, uncomfortable bed. The red cutout dress that had symbolized her high-flying corporate status lay discarded in a crumpled heap on the floor. She wore an oversized grey hoodie and sweatpants, her long dark wavy hair pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail. The glittering pearl necklace Savannah had once worn and Mia had foolishly tried to emulate sat forgotten on the nightstand, looking cheap and tarnished under the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb.

The exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours weighed upon her like lead. After spending six grueling hours answering questions from federal investigators, she felt entirely hollowed out. The ambition that had consumed her every waking thought for years now felt like a distant, grotesque delusion. She had traded her ethics, her friendships, and her peace of mind for corner-office status and a wardrobe of designer clothes that now meant nothing.

Her phone buzzed violently on the nightstand, displaying an alert from a news aggregator app. A flashing headline caught her eye: APEX VANGUARD SUSPENDS OPERATIONS AMID FEDERAL FRAUD PROBE; EXECUTIVE BOARD FACES CRIMINAL INDICTMENT. Below the bold text was a photograph of Mr. Ward looking stunned and defeated as federal marshals escorted him out of the corporate headquarters.

Mia buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, shuddering breath. The tears that came this time were not driven by panic, but by a profound, agonizing grief for the person she had become. She had looked at Savannah—graceful, intelligent, and unshakeably grounded—and had felt only burning envy. She had convinced herself that in the corporate jungle, survival required ruthlessness, that kindness was a fatal flaw, and that stepping over others was the only way to climb.

Now, sitting in a sterile room with her career in absolute ruins and her future clouded by legal uncertainty, she understood the devastating cost of her choices. Savannah had not beaten her with superior aggression or underhanded tactics; Savannah had simply stood her ground with absolute integrity, allowing Mia and Ward to destroy themselves through their own unchecked greed.

A soft knock at the apartment door made her flinch. She stood up slowly, her legs trembling slightly, and walked to the peephole. A federal marshal stood outside, holding a small manila envelope containing her temporary immunity agreement and a court summons for the upcoming grand jury hearings. Mia took a deep, steadying breath, placed her hand on the cold brass knob, and opened the door. For the first time in her adult life, she was facing the unvarnished truth without a mask, without a scheme, and without an excuse.
