Chapter 4

The glowing screen of the smartphone cast an eerie blue light across the marble floor, illuminating the profound despair etched onto Mia’s tear-streaked face. Savannah stood tall in her chic beige blouse and blue jeans, looking down with absolute, freezing indifference. The visual evidence playing on the device was undeniable, capturing every furtive glance, every keystroke, and the exact timestamp of the corporate theft that had formed the cornerstone of the plot against her.

"This is a video of her previously stealing my personal property," Savannah said coldly, addressing not just the broken woman at her feet, but the digital logging system transmitting the feed directly to the corporate compliance server. "And that is merely the opening chapter of the archive I compiled. Every document you and Ward altered, every unauthorized transfer you routed through offshore accounts—it has all been mirrored and timestamped."

Mia stared at the screen, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The realization that her entire betrayal had been meticulously documented and preserved paralyzed her vocal cords. She had thought herself clever, deleting local cache files and believing her digital footprint was clean, but she had underestimated Savannah’s technical brilliance and capacity for strategic foresight. Savannah had not fought back immediately because she understood that fighting prematurely only gave the enemy room to maneuver. Instead, she had stepped back, watched them build their house of cards, and waited patiently for the inevitable wind.

"You can't submit this to the board," Mia whispered, her voice trembling violently as she tried to grasp at a fading straw. "It will trigger a federal investigation. Apex Vanguard will collapse, and everyone connected to it will go down, including you."

"Let me correct your misunderstanding, Mia," Savannah replied, her tone dropping into a chillingly calm register. "I resigned from Apex Vanguard three weeks before the audit. My name is entirely scrubbed from the current financial liabilities. The board will indeed face a federal investigation, but it will be spearheaded by the independent audit committee I briefed this morning. Ward is currently trying to shred documents in his office, completely unaware that the shredder feeds into a secure holding bin that my team installed last weekend."

The finality of the statement hit Mia with the force of a physical blow. Her hands slowly slipped away from Savannah’s ankles, falling limp against the marble floor. The ambition that had driven her ruthless ascent had evaporated, leaving behind the hollow shell of a person who had traded her integrity for corporate scraps. She realized that Savannah was not seeking petty revenge; she was executing a cold, systemic cleanup of an infected institution.

Savannah slipped her smartphone back into her pocket, adjusted her pearl necklace with a practiced, elegant gesture, and stepped gracefully around Mia’s kneeling form. She did not look back as she walked toward the private elevator, leaving the architect of her professional ruin broken in the dust of her own design.
