Chapter 6

While Savannah found peace in her riverfront sanctuary, the thirty-second floor of Apex Vanguard was descending into absolute chaos. The morning sun broke through the glass facade, casting harsh, unforgiving light over a scene of corporate wreckage. Mr. Ward sat heavily at the head of the mahogany conference room table, his slicked-back hair slightly disheveled, the green-and-beige split blazer discarded over the back of his chair. He stared blankly at the glowing monitor of his desktop terminal, where a bright red federal seizure notice flashed rhythmically against the dark screen.

The private security detail hired by the independent audit committee had arrived an hour before dawn, securing the building before anyone else could arrive. They had systematically confiscated hard drives, server backups, and physical ledgers. Ward’s desperate attempt to shred incriminating documents had failed miserably when the automated holding bin had locked automatically, preserving every single shredded fragment for forensic reconstruction. He was trapped in a financial trap of his own construction, realizing too late that his arrogance had blinded him to the meticulous preparation of the woman he had tried to erase.

The office door pushed open quietly, and legal counsel for the board strode in without knocking. The attorney, a sharp-faced man named Harrison, dropped a thick leather-bound dossier onto the table directly in front of Ward. The impact was heavy, signaling the end of any remaining pretenses.

"The federal investigators have already secured the offshore accounts linked to the Felicia contract manipulation," Harrison said, his voice flat and devoid of professional courtesy. "Furthermore, the forensic audit of the past three fiscal years reveals a systematic pattern of asset misappropriation and falsified compliance reports. Your signature is on every single unauthorized transaction, Mr. Ward."

Ward tried to summon the arrogant bluster that had defined his executive tenure, but his throat felt dry and constricted. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He knew the game was over. The board of directors had already initiated emergency proceedings to strip him of his stock options, his pension, and his executive title. He was facing not only professional ruin, but potential federal indictment for corporate wire fraud and obstruction of justice.

"Where is Mia?" Ward managed to croak out, desperate to shift at least a portion of the looming liability.

"Ms. Lee tendered her resignation at midnight via email, accompanied by a comprehensive sworn affidavit detailing your direct instructions regarding the falsification of the asset transfer files," Harrison replied coldly. "She is currently cooperating fully with the federal prosecutor's office in exchange for witness protection and reduced sentencing recommendations. You are entirely on your own, Ward."
