Chapter 3

The heavy oak doors of the executive suite closed with a definitive thud, sealing Mia’s fate inside the building’s sterile inner sanctum. Humiliated, panicked, and entirely abandoned, Mia stumbled out into the dimly lit hallway. Her carefully constructed facade was completely shattered. Mascara streaked darkly down her tear-stained cheeks, and her once-impeccable hair clung damply to her forehead. The red cutout dress offered no protection against the chilling draft sweeping through the corridor. She saw the familiar beige blouse of Savannah walking toward the elevators and knew, with a sudden, desperate surge of realization, that her only salvation lay at the feet of the woman she had betrayed.

Without hesitation, Mia dropped to her knees on the cold marble floor. The impact sent a sharp pain shooting through her joints, but she ignored it, lunging forward with desperate desperation. Her trembling fingers clawed at the hem of Savannah’s beige blouse, clutching the fabric as if it were a physical lifeline preventing her from plunging into an abyss.

"Savannah, please... please let me go," Mia sobbed, her voice breaking into ragged, pathetic gasps. The polished sophistication that had defined her public persona was utterly gone, replaced by the raw, primal instinct of survival. "I was a fool. Ward manipulated me. He promised me the vice presidency if I helped him push you out, but he’s throwing me to the wolves. You have the power to stop this. Please, show some mercy."

Savannah stopped walking. She did not recoil from the touch, nor did she look down with anger or triumph. Instead, her posture remained straight, her gaze steady and profoundly detached. She looked down at the woman who had orchestrated her professional exile not with rage, but with the cold, clinical curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope. The contrast between Savannah’s pristine attire, accented by her luminous pearl necklace, and Mia’s ruined state was a stark visual testament to the reversal of their fortunes.

"Mercy, Mia?" Savannah asked, her voice dangerously quiet, cutting cleanly through the sound of weeping. "Did you offer mercy when you wiped my database clean? Did you feel pity when you fabricated those performance reviews to justify my termination?"

"I had no choice!" Mia wept, pressing her forehead against the cool marble, completely stripped of her pride. "Ward threatened to ruin my career if I didn't cooperate. Please, Savannah, I'll give you everything back. I'll resign today. I'll leave the city."

Savannah slowly pulled the hem of her blouse away from Mia’s frantic grip, her movements unhurried and precise. She raised her right hand, holding up her smartphone so the screen illuminated the dark corridor with a sharp, brilliant light. On the display, high-definition security footage played in a continuous loop, capturing Mia in the act of copying confidential files directly from Savannah's unattended terminal weeks ago.
