Chapter 2: Fractured Glass

Down on the thirty-second floor, the climate inside the conference room was entirely different. Fluorescent lights beat down mercilessly on polished mahogany, casting stark shadows across the tense faces of the remaining executives. At the head of the long table, Mr. Ward stood rigidly, his posture radiating aggressive dominance. He slammed a heavy stack of physical audit files onto the desk, the sharp slap echoing off the glass walls like a gunshot. His gaze locked onto Mia, who sat rigidly near the center in a striking red cutout dress that suddenly felt entirely too fragile for the room.

Mia's face was completely drained of color. The ambitious spark that usually defined her sharp features had vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic. Her hands trembled in her lap, fingers digging desperately into the fabric of her dress. The catastrophic loss of the Felicia account had triggered a financial avalanche that Apex Vanguard could not survive, and Ward was looking for someone to absorb the lethal impact of the collapse.

"If Felicia is still not satisfied, the partnership will be canceled!" Ward shouted, leaning forward so far that the veins in his neck strained against his collar. His arrogant corporate exterior was cracking under the immense pressure of impending financial ruin. "Do you understand what that means for us, Mia? You handled the client relations for this quarter. The missing asset verification files are on your desk, and Felicia's legal team is threatening a complete criminal audit!"

Mia swallowed hard, her throat feeling as though it were lined with broken glass. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. The brilliant corporate climber realized with sickening clarity that she was being positioned as the sole scapegoat for a conspiracy she and Ward had built together. Ward didn't care about truth or loyalty; he cared only about self-preservation. He adjusted his split blazer with a sharp, dismissive jerk of his shoulders, signaling that her utility had officially expired.

The heavy silence in the room pressed down on Mia like a physical weight. She looked around the table for an ally, but the other executives averted their eyes, unwilling to be caught in the blast radius of her professional execution. Panic fluttered wildly in her chest. She knew that Ward had already transferred the incriminating digital signatures onto her terminal, effectively locking her out of the defense systems.

"I didn't forge those asset transfers alone, Mr. Ward," Mia managed to whisper, her voice cracking with suppressed terror. "You signed off on the secondary routing numbers. We shared the risk."

Ward leaned in closer, his eyes cold and devoid of human empathy. "Prove it," he muttered softly, a venomous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Because right now, the paper trail points entirely to your workstation."
