Chapter 12: Lessons in the Sun**

A week later, the autumn leaves turned brilliant shades of amber and gold in the hospital’s courtyard.

For the first time in eight months, Maya was allowed outside in a wheelchair. She sat wrapped in a colorful fleece blanket, laughing as pigeons fluttered around her feet, chasing breadcrumbs she tossed onto the pavement.

Leo and Holloway sat side by side on a green wooden bench, a small wooden chessboard set between them.

"Knight to F3," Leo said, sliding the carved wooden piece across the board.

Holloway studied the layout, nodding with genuine approval. "A defensive opening with an aggressive diagonal. You're learning to protect your flanks."

"You taught me that the strongest pieces aren't the ones that attack," Leo replied, looking up with a bright, open smile. "It's the pieces that protect the ones who can't move."

Holloway rested his hand on his cane, a profound gentleness in his eyes. "The world will always try to tell you that power means having more than everyone else, Leo. But real power is having the ability to share what you have until nobody is left in the dark."

Dr. Rossi walked out into the garden, carrying two warm cups of hot chocolate. She handed one to Leo and sat beside Maya, watching the boy and the old man with deep gratitude.

"The foundation board voted this morning," Elena told Holloway. "They named the pediatric wing after your late daughter, Sarah."

Holloway paused, his fingers lightly touching the carved king on the chessboard. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his scarred cheek before he wiped it away with a steady hand.

"Thank you, Elena," Holloway whispered. "Sarah would have liked that. She always hated hospital walls that were painted white."
