Chapter 6

The rain drummed a relentless, heavy tattoo against the reinforced glass of the federal safehouse three days after the raid. Elena sat at a stainless-steel kitchen island, the pale blue glow of a secure terminal illuminating her face. Leo was napping in a portable bassinet nearby, his breathing soft and even. The secure safehouse, provided by U.S. Marshals, was supposed to be impenetrable, but the digital dossier Assistant U.S. Attorney Gable had just uploaded to her terminal suggested otherwise.
She scrolled through the encrypted financial trails linked to Aegis Prime, the mysterious holding entity that had co-signed the illegal asset transfers from her father’s estate. The more she dug, the more terrifying the picture became. Aegis Prime wasn't just a corporate shell; it was a dark-pool investment fund controlled by a consortium of elite industrialists and retired intelligence operatives—men and women who operated in the shadows of global policy.
Her smartwatch buzzed with a sharp, double-pulse alert. It wasn't an SOS this time; it was a localized encrypted ping from an unknown sender within the federal database network. Warning: Unidentified access attempt detected on your father's archived patent registry.
Elena’s fingers flew across the keyboard, tracing the digital ping back to its source. The intrusion wasn't coming from outside the federal network—it was originating from inside the Department of Justice’s own internal server farm in Washington. Someone with high-level clearance was actively trying to purge the remaining digital blueprints of Dr. Marcus Thorne’s revolutionary quantum encryption tech before it could be presented as trial evidence.
The secure comms unit on the wall hissed to life, crackling with static before Captain Sarah Vance’s voice came through, strained and urgent. "Elena? Do you copy?"
"I copy, Captain. What's happening?"
"We have a security breach at the downtown holding facility," Sarah said, the sound of distant sirens bleeding through her microphone. "Julian and Beatrice were scheduled for routine transfer to the federal penitentiary medical wing for evaluation. Their transport was intercepted three blocks from the courthouse by an unmarked tactical unit. They're gone."
Elena felt her blood turn to ice. "Gone? How? The marshals had a full convoy."
"It wasn't a standard jailbreak," Sarah replied grimly. "The interceptors used high-grade military EMP tech—the exact same quantum-shielded disruption hardware tied to the Aegis Prime patents we found in your father’s old files. They didn't just break Julian out; they rescued him because he knows where the physical master drives are hidden."
"The physical master drives," Elena whispered, her mind racing. When her father died, Julian had claimed the original hardware containing the uncompressed source code of their technology was destroyed in a laboratory fire. But if the master drives still existed—somewhere deep within the subterranean vaults of the original Vance family estate—whoever controlled them would hold the keys to global cyber-dominance.
"Where are you right now, Captain?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into an icy, resolute register.

"I'm heading back to the primary estate with an armed tactical unit. We're securing the perimeter now."
"Don't go in alone," Elena warned, already unbuckling her smartwatch and securing her tactical gear jacket. "The Vance estate was built on hidden foundations you haven't seen yet. If Julian is heading back there, he's going down into the subterranean vault. And I'm going with him."
