Chapter 12

Two weeks later, the salty breeze of the Atlantic Ocean swept through the open windows of the weathered wooden cottage perched on the rugged rocky cliffs of coastal Maine. The sound of crashing waves provided a rhythmic, soothing backdrop to the quiet room. Elena stood at the wooden kitchen counter, stirring a pot of formula for Leo while watching the seagulls dip and soar over the grey-blue expanse of the ocean.

The cottage had been her sanctuary before the Vance dynasty swallowed her life whole. Every floorboard creaked with memories of her father, Dr. Marcus Thorne, sitting at the very same wooden table late into the night, sketching quantum equations by the light of a single brass lamp. Now, those equations were no longer locked in corporate vaults or weaponized by shadow syndicates; they were safely archived in decentralized academic networks dedicated to renewable energy and global communication security.

A sharp, pleasant chime rang out from the vintage wall phone near the pantry. Elena wiped her hands on a linen dish towel and walked over to answer it.

"Hello?"

"Elena Thorne," a calm, familiar voice spoke through the receiver. It was Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Gable. "I hope I'm not interrupting your morning routine."

"Not at all, Marcus," Elena replied, looking out the window toward the horizon where the sun was now fully risen, painting the water in brilliant shades of gold and amber. "How are things in Washington?"

"Busy, to put it mildly," Gable chuckled on the other end. "The congressional hearings are moving faster than anyone anticipated. Julian and Beatrice’s defense team tried to file a motion for a mistrial citing 'undue psychological pressure,' but Judge Alvarez threw it out within five minutes. They're looking at consecutive sentences that will keep them behind bars for the rest of their natural lives."

Elena felt a profound wave of relief wash over her. Not out of malice or revenge, but out of closure. The ghosts of the grand ballroom—the shattered glass, the blood on Julian’s temple, the terror in Beatrice’s eyes—felt like a lifetime away.

"And Aegis Prime?" Elena asked.

" Completely dismantled," Gable confirmed. "The financial assets seized from their dark-pool accounts are being redirected into federal restitution funds, with primary allocations directed straight back to your father’s foundational research trust. You're officially one of the principal grant commissioners for global tech ethics."
