Chapter 5

By dawn, the chaos of the estate had shifted to the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridors of the Federal District Courthouse downtown. Elena sat in a private family waiting room provided by the prosecutor's office, far away from the media circus swirling outside the front steps. The room was sparse—a beige couch, a low wooden coffee table, and a small crib where Leo slept peacefully, completely oblivious to the historical legal earthquake unfolding just down the hall.
The door clicked open, and Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Gable stepped inside, carrying a thick stack of manila folders. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened and his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, but there was a quiet triumph in his tired eyes. He pulled up a chair across from Elena and sat down with a heavy sigh.
"Judge Alvarez has denied bail for both Julian and Beatrice," Gable announced, tossing the top folder onto the table. "Given the nature of the Omega protocol data you transmitted, combined with the international flight risks and the financial records we seized from their primary servers overnight, they're looking at a minimum of twenty years on federal fraud, conspiracy, and extortion charges."
Elena nodded slowly, feeling a cold, hollow satisfaction rather than joy. "And the trust fund?"
"Frozen under federal receivership," Gable confirmed, leaning forward. "Every cent Julian funneled out of your father’s original patent accounts has been traced and locked. By tomorrow afternoon, full legal custody and trusteeship of Leo’s estate will be officially restored to you, with zero Vance family oversight. You are completely free, Elena."
Free. The word echoed in her mind, heavy and unfamiliar. For three years, every breath she took had been monitored, every movement dictated, every ambition crushed under the heavy boot of Julian’s corporate empire. Now, the cage doors were wide open. Yet, as she looked down at her sleeping son, a lingering unease pricked at the back of her mind. Empires like the Vance dynasty did not crumble without leaving tripwires behind.
"Julian wasn't acting alone," Elena said quietly, her eyes meeting the prosecutor's. "The financial scale of the offshore transfers... it required institutional banking collusion at the highest level. The signatures on those shell company accounts weren't just Julian's and Beatrice's. There was a third party—someone with direct access to federal regulatory boards."

Gable’s expression tightened. He opened one of the manila folders, revealing a redacted bank transfer statement bearing a partial signature block. "We found the same anomaly in the preliminary audit an hour ago. A Swiss routing code linked to an anonymous holding entity called 'Aegis Prime.' Our financial crimes unit is running traces on it now, but whoever is behind Aegis Prime has deep political connections in Washington."
Elena stood up, walking over to the window that overlooked the gray skyline of the city. The sun was struggling to break through the morning smog, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons below. "They thought they could silence me with a marriage certificate and a gilded cage," she murmured, her reflection staring back at her with eyes hardened by survival. "They have no idea what I'm truly capable of."
