Chapter 10

The sudden plunge into darkness was accompanied by a deep, low-frequency hum that vibrated through the lead-lined concrete walls of the subterranean vault. Julian let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that echoed off the metal server racks.

"You think you stopped them?" Julian shouted over the rising din of the emergency generators kicking in. "Aegis Prime doesn't rely on a single server farm, Elena! That secondary ping was a dead-man switch. The moment the primary data link was terminated, the automated protocols initiated a complete wipe of every offshore asset, digital archive, and financial trail tied to the Vance dynasty—and your own identity!"

Elena didn't hesitate. She tapped the knuckle of her left hand against her smartwatch, activating the emergency tactical flashlight built into the casing. A bright, narrow beam of white light cut through the gloom, illuminating Julian’s manic grin and the terrified, wide-eyed expression of Beatrice, who had apparently been brought down to the bunker by the secondary tactical team moments earlier.

"Elena! Please, you have to listen to us!" Beatrice cried out, stumbling forward until a tactical operative gently guided her onto a concrete bench. Her red hair was disheveled, her designer gown torn at the hem. "Julian lied to me too! He told me the offshore accounts were just standard tax shelters. I didn't know about the surveillance, the extortion..."

"Shut up, Beatrice!" Julian snarled, straining against his restraints. "Don't grovel to her! She's destroying everything we built!"

"You built nothing, Julian," Elena said softly, stepping closer to the main console. Her fingers flew across the emergency terminal, her father’s old encryption protocols guiding her through the encrypted firewall layers that Julian had spent a decade locking away. "You stole my father's research, you murdered his career, and you tried to steal my son's future. But you forgot one fundamental law of code: every dead-man switch leaves a trace."

Captain Sarah Vance aimed her tactical flashlight toward the far corner of the vault, where a secondary auxiliary terminal was rapidly blinking a frantic amber light. "Elena, look at that auxiliary readout. The dead-man switch isn't wiping your identity... it’s uploading a full ledger of Aegis Prime’s global political contacts to an open-source decentralized network."

Julian’s laughter abruptly died in his throat. His face drained of what little color remained. "No... no, that's impossible. That's classified at presidential oversight levels! If those names go public—politicians, central bankers, intelligence directors—the entire global financial system will implode."

"Then maybe it's time for the system to burn and be built the right way," Elena replied, her voice steady and resolute. She pressed her thumb onto the biometric scanner of the auxiliary terminal, authorizing the open-source upload.
