Chapter 3

The sharp scent of shattered glass and expensive alcohol filled the air as Maya and Elena grappled near the base of the bar counter. Maya blocked a wild swing from Elena, her forearm absorbing the impact with a dull thud. The physical exertion was heavy in their lungs, both women breathing hard, their chests rising and falling in rhythm with the pulsing bass of the distant sound system.
Clara finally stirred from the couch, pushing herself up on trembling legs. The heavy, wine-soaked fabric of her clothes clung uncomfortably to her frame, making every movement sluggish. She watched in horror as her two closest friends—the pillars of her adult life—tear into each other over the ruins of what she knew was a catastrophic secret.
“Stop! Both of you, stop it!” Clara cried out, her voice cracking with a mixture of grief and exhaustion. But her plea was swallowed entirely by the ambient noise of the bar and the driving rain against the glass.
Elena shoved Maya backward, breaking the clinch for a split second. Elena’s face was flushed, a rare breach in her otherwise impenetrable armor. “You think you’re protecting her, Maya?” Elena hissed, wiping a smudge of dirt from her black blazer. “You have no idea what she did to the firm. To all of us.”
Maya didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, closing the distance instantly, her pink platform boots planting firmly on the sticky floor. “I know enough to know you don’t solve corporate theft by pouring wine over someone’s head like a petty tyrant,” Maya snapped back. “You handle it legally, or you talk to me first.”
“Talk to you?” Elena laughed bitterly, a harsh, clipped sound. “You were ready to cover for her, weren’t you? You’ve always protected Clara, no matter how deep the rot goes.”

“That’s a lie,” Maya said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “And you know it.”
The argument was cut short as Elena launched a desperate, sweeping right hook. It was a telltale sign of exhaustion, a wide and undisciplined punch born of pure frustration. Maya saw it coming a mile away. She sidestepped the blow effortlessly, her athletic reflexes taking over. With precise, calculated momentum, Maya gathered her strength for the final strike.
