Chapter 11

The rain had finally ceased by morning, leaving the streets of the financial district gleaming under a pale, deceptive sun. Inside the sleek, minimalist offices of Vance & Delgado, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Employees spoke in hushed whispers around the water cooler, acutely aware that a massive corporate restructuring was taking place behind closed doors.
Maya walked through the glass-walled corridors wearing her signature white varsity jacket over a sleek black crop top and high-waisted trousers, her pink platform boots echoing loudly against the polished concrete floor. She carried a secure flash drive tucked safely inside her inner pocket. The drive contained not only the server logs proving Elena’s manipulation of the escrow loophole but also the finalized merger documents that would legally protect Clara from criminal prosecution by transferring her remaining liabilities directly into the corporate restructuring fund.
She pushed open the door to Elena’s corner office without knocking.
Elena sat behind her massive glass desk, reviewing a stack of physical contract drafts. She looked up, her expression tightening slightly as she took in Maya’s defiant posture and casual streetwear, which stood out in sharp contrast to the corporate formality of the day.
“You’re cutting it close, Maya,” Elena said, setting her pen down. “The representatives from the acquiring corporation will be here in twenty minutes. I trust you’ve decided to put the firm’s interests first.”
“I’ve made my decision, Elena,” Maya replied, stepping forward and placing the secure flash drive squarely in the center of the glass desk.
Elena glanced down at the drive, then back up at Maya, her dark eyes narrowing with sudden suspicion. “What is this?”
“That contains every master server log from the past six months,” Maya said evenly. “Including the administrative override you executed from your private terminal to create the escrow loophole Clara’s husband exploited. The board is going to see it before the merger documents are signed.”
For the first time since their confrontation at The Velvet Anchor, Elena’s composure fractured. She stood up so abruptly that her executive chair rolled backward and crashed against the wall behind her. The cold, calculating mask slipped entirely, revealing a flash of genuine panic and deep-seated betrayal.

“You would destroy everything we’ve built?” Elena hissed, rounding the desk to confront Maya face-to-face. “You’d burn the firm to the ground just to protect someone who was already drowning?”
“You burned it down the moment you decided to treat your friends like pawns on a chessboard,” Maya said, standing her ground without flinching. “The game is over, Elena.”
