Chapter 1

The air inside The Velvet Anchor tasted like damp copper and expensive vintage. Outside, the rain lashed against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, distorting the neon glow of the downtown skyline into blurred, bleeding streaks of light. Inside, the silence was heavy, broken only by the steady, sickening sound of liquid dripping onto fabric.

Elena Vance stood over the low-slung velvet couch, her posture rigid. She wore a tailored black blazer that seemed to absorb the dim ambient light, her thirty-year-old face a mask of absolute, chilling calm. In her right hand, she tilted a crystal stem glass. A slow, heavy stream of dark red wine cascaded downward, soaking into the dark, wet hair of the woman sitting below her.

Clara Hayes didn’t flinch. She simply sat there, her shoulders drenched, the deep crimson fluid pooling in her lap and dripping onto the plush rug. Clara’s dark hair was matted to her forehead, and a single drop of wine traced a slow path down her cheek like a tear she refused to shed. They had known each other since college, sharing secrets, apartments, and ambitions, but tonight, the architecture of their history had collapsed entirely. Elena gave no warning, offered no parting insult. She simply emptied the glass until the last heavy drop fell, then lowered her hand, her long brown hair falling forward to shadow her eyes.

The ambient jazz music playing overhead felt bitterly ironic. Across the dimly lit room, a few patrons turned away quickly, pretending not to notice the quiet violence unfolding in the corner booth. Elena set the empty glass down on the marble cocktail table with a sharp click that cut through the low murmur of the bar.

Before Elena could turn away, a sudden motion cut across the room. Maya Delgado strode forward, her high ponytail swinging sharply behind her. Maya, thirty years old and radiating an unyielding, athletic energy, wore a crisp white varsity jacket with pink sleeves, a black crop top, black shorts, and impossible pink platform boots that clicked with authority against the hardwood floor. She stepped directly between Elena and the seated Clara, her gaze locking onto Elena with sharp, defensive fury.

Maya’s jaw tightened. She didn't raise her voice, but her words carried an electric charge that commanded the immediate attention of everyone in the vicinity.

“Stop it,” Maya said, her voice low and steady.

Elena tilted her head slightly, her expression remaining entirely unreadable. “Or what?” Elena asked, the challenge hanging in the air like smoke.
