Chapter 10

The glow of Maya’s laptop screen cast a harsh blue light across her face as she sat cross-legged on her living room floor well past midnight. Lines of encrypted code, server logs, and financial routing data scrolled past her eyes with dizzying speed. Beside her sat a half-empty mug of cold tea and the crumpled manila folder Clara had given her earlier that afternoon.

Clara’s revelation had shattered Maya’s understanding of the entire conflict. Elena hadn't simply been a betrayed partner seeking righteous vengeance; she had been the architect of Clara’s downfall, manipulating the firm’s internal security protocols to manufacture a crisis that would force Clara out and leave Elena in sole control of the impending merger with a major multinational conglomerate.

Maya’s fingers flew across the keyboard. She bypassed the primary corporate firewall using an old developer backdoor that Elena had forgotten existed from their early startup days. Deep within the archived server directories, Maya located the master access logs for the escrow accounts.

The digital trail was undeniable. Three months ago, while Maya and Clara were attending a regional conference in Chicago, an administrative override had been executed from Elena’s private terminal. The override had deliberately disabled the secondary verification protocol on the escrow accounts, creating a temporary security loophole just large enough for a desperate person like Clara’s husband to exploit. Elena hadn't just watched Clara walk into the trap; she had built the bridge and waved her across.

Maya leaned back against her sofa, rubbing her tired eyes. The betrayal cut deeper than she cared to admit. For ten years, the three of them had been an unbreakable triad. They had weathered lawsuits, cash flow crises, and hostile takeover attempts together. To discover that Elena had weaponized their friendship for corporate dominance felt like a physical blow to the chest.

Her phone buzzed violently on the coffee table, breaking the quiet of the room. The caller ID flashed Elena’s name.

Maya stared at the screen for several seconds, letting it ring twice before sliding her thumb across the glass to answer.

“It’s late, Elena,” Maya said flatly.

“I know you have the server logs, Maya,” Elena’s voice came through the receiver, remarkably calm and devoid of panic. “I saw your IP address ping the archived directories ten minutes ago. Don't be foolish. Bringing those logs to the board won't save Clara; it will only blow up the entire firm, and the merger will collapse for all of us.”

“You set her up,” Maya said, her voice trembling with restrained fury. “You deliberately opened the firewall so Clara’s husband would take the bait. You destroyed her life just to consolidate your own power.”

“I secured our future,” Elena countered coldly. “The market is ruthless, Maya. If we hadn't merged, the firm would have gone under within six months anyway. Clara’s weakness was a liability we couldn't afford to carry. Now, are you going to be a professional and help me finalize the transition tomorrow, or are you going to ruin everything we’ve built over a sentimental attachment?”
