Chapter 14

Late into the evening, the offices of Vance & Delgado were entirely deserted save for the faint hum of the server racks in the basement. The merger had been salvaged at the eleventh hour, restructured under joint oversight that spared the firm from bankruptcy while stripping Elena of her voting shares and executive power.

Elena sat alone in her dark office, the lights turned off, watching the city lights through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Her tailored black blazer lay draped over the back of her desk chair, and her long brown hair fell loosely around her shoulders. The bruised jaw throbbed dully, a physical reminder of the night at The Velvet Anchor when the first domino had fallen.

The door clicked open softly. Maya stepped inside, wearing her white varsity jacket and pink platform boots. She didn't turn on the overhead lights, stopping a few feet away from Elena’s desk.

“You’re still here,” Maya said quietly.

Elena didn't turn around, continuing to gaze out at the rainy skyline. “Where else is there to go? I built this place from the ground up, Maya. Every client, every contract, every stone in this foundation. And in the end, I built my own prison.”

“You chose ambition over humanity, Elena,” Maya said, her tone devoid of malice, carrying only a profound, melancholic sadness. “That wasn't the market’s fault. That was yours.”

Elena slowly turned her head, looking at Maya in the dim ambient light. A faint, sad smile touched the corners of her lips. “Do you remember that terrible futon in our first apartment? The one with the broken spring that poked us in the back every single night?”

“I remember,” Maya replied softly. “We swore we’d never become the kind of people who stepped on others to get ahead.”

“I guess we broke that promise somewhere along the way,” Elena whispered, looking down at her hands.

Maya took a slow step forward, placing a single manila envelope on the edge of the desk. “Clara agreed not to pursue criminal charges, provided you step down voluntarily and surrender your remaining assets to the restructuring pool. You won't go to jail, Elena. But you’re leaving here tonight, and you’re never coming back.”

Elena looked at the envelope, then back up at Maya. She slowly nodded, reaching out to pick it up. The chapter of their lives together was finally closed, sealed in ash and silence.
