Chapter 7: The Voice in the Wire

The electronic distortion lingered in Maya’s ear long after the call had disconnected, a cold phantom breath freezing the sweat on the back of her neck. She stared at the screen as the call log displayed a localized relay originating from inside the police perimeter itself. Someone within the very law enforcement agency she had just trusted was working directly with the conspiracy.
"Agent Vance!" Maya called out, spinning around to face the federal investigator who was conferring with a local captain near the ambulance.
Agent Vance turned back, sensing the sudden panic in her voice. He jogged over, his boots splashing through a puddle. "What is it? Did Thorne escape?"
"No," Maya said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The call. It just came through on my encrypted line. A localized relay from right here—inside your perimeter."
Agent Vance’s brow furrowed deeply. He pulled out his own secure terminal, tapping rapidly across the glass screen to pull up the encrypted ping logs for the alleyway. The screen flashed amber, displaying an unauthorized local transceiver signal bouncing off a squad car parked thirty feet away.
"Captain Miller," Agent Vance muttered, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward a veteran local police captain leaning against the hood of a cruiser, casually smoking a cigarette.
Before Agent Vance could take a step toward the captain, a sharp crack of a suppressed gunshot echoed through the narrow brick alleyway. A bullet sparked off the brick wall mere inches from Agent Vance’s head, showering them both in masonry dust.
"Down! Take cover!" Agent Vance roared, tackling Maya behind the reinforced steel bumper of the ambulance.
Return fire erupted instantly from the tactical team stationed at the diner’s rear exit. Shouts, boots pounding on pavement, and the frantic barking of police radio chatter filled the night air. Maya pressed her face against the cold tire of the ambulance, her mind racing. The conspiracy wasn't just corporate; it had infected the local police department from the top down.
Across the alley, Captain Miller dropped his cigarette, drew his service weapon, and sprinted toward a black unmarked sedan idling near the dumpster. He wasn't firing at the threat—he was running away from it.
"He's fleeing!" Maya yelled, pointing a finger toward the accelerating sedan.
Agent Vance didn't hesitate. He pulled himself up, unholstered his sig sauer, and fired two warning shots into the air, but the sedan’s tires screeched against the asphalt as it rocketed out of the alleyway and vanished into the city traffic.
Agent Vance lowered his weapon, breathing heavily, his face tight with anger. He turned to Maya, who was slowly standing up, brushing glass and dust from her navy blazer.
"You're no longer safe anywhere near this jurisdiction, Maya," Agent Vance said grimly. "They know you have the drive. They know you won't stop."

"Good," Maya replied, her eyes flashing with cold determination. "Because neither will I."
She pulled her phone back out. The live stream had been abruptly terminated by the platform due to a sudden 'copyright violation' strike filed by an unknown corporate entity representing the Vance Foundation.
