Chapter 2: The Ghost of the Boardroom

Elena caught her balance against a folding table, the sequins of her dress scraping roughly against the metal edge. The glittering glass fragments crunched beneath the boots of the stunned onlookers. Maya did not wait for an apology or a retreat. She turned on her heel, her black vest swishing sharply, and marched straight toward the employee locker room at the back of the diner. Elena’s mind raced, desperately trying to connect the face of the humble waitress with the haunting memories of a corporate war she thought she had won five years ago.

"Stop her!" Elena hissed to the diner manager, who was frozen near the register. "Don't let her near the microphone!"

Manager Tom merely stared at Elena, paralyzed by the sheer social hierarchy crashing down around them. The banquet room was rented out tonight for the annual Silicon Valley Philanthropy Gala, an event Elena had organized to cement her legacy as a charitable icon. But Maya’s parting words hinted at something far more destructive than a ruined dinner service. They hinted at the truth behind the Vance Foundation's founding capital—a secret buried under mountains of non-disclosure agreements and forged signatures.

Inside the locker room, Maya locked the door with a firm click. The rustic, grease-stained walls contrasted sharply with the fire burning in her eyes. She reached into her locker, past her spare apron and a worn paperback novel, to retrieve a heavy manila envelope stamped with red classification seals. Her fingers traced the rough paper edge. This envelope contained the forensic accounting reports proving Elena had systematically looted the pension fund of a bankrupt textile mill—the very mill where Maya’s father had worked until his tragic, untimely death.

Maya unbuttoned her white uniform shirt, letting it drop to the floor. Beneath it, she wore a tailored navy blue blazer that fit her frame with corporate precision. She clipped a VIP guest pass onto her lapel—a pass bearing the name of the keynote speaker who had mysteriously fallen ill earlier that evening.

Outside the locker room door, heavy footsteps approached. Someone slammed a fist against the metal.

"Open up, Maya! We need to talk about your demands!" Elena’s voice muffled through the steel, tinged with sheer desperation.

Maya slipped the manila envelope into her inner jacket pocket, picked up her smartphone, and tapped the screen. A live audio stream began recording, broadcasting directly to the personal emails of every major media outlet in the state.

She turned the deadbolt, pulled the door open, and looked straight into Elena’s terrified eyes.
