Chapter 6: The Weight of Retribution

The flashlight beam blinded Maya for a fraction of a second, but her reflexes, honed by years of surviving the harshest streets of the industrial district, did not fail her. As Marcus lunged with the steel baton raised, Maya swung the heavy industrial fire extinguisher in a wide, sweeping arc. The steel cylinder connected with his ribs with a sickening crack, sending him crashing sideways into a stack of aluminum lighting trusses.
Marcus groaned, dropping the baton as he clutched his side, gasping for air. The red laser sight rolled across the floor, detached from its mounting rail. Maya didn't hesitate. She dropped the empty extinguisher, vaulted over his writhing body, and shoved open the heavy steel emergency exit door.
Cool night air rushed into her lungs as she spilled out into the alleyway behind the diner. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second. Red and blue strobe lights painted the wet pavement at the end of the block. Federal agents and local police cruisers were converging on the Silver Spoon Diner from all directions.
Maya leaned against the brick wall of the alley, her navy blazer torn at the shoulder, her breathing ragged but triumphant. She pulled out her phone. The live stream had accumulated over two hundred thousand views, and the comment section was an avalanche of outrage, shock, and calls for immediate arrests.
A heavy hand clamped down on her shoulder from behind. Maya spun around, fists raised, ready to strike again.
"Hold your fire! Federal agents!" a sharp, commanding voice barked.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit flashed a gold badge under the orange glow of the alley’s security light. His eyes were sharp, intelligent, and entirely unimpressed by her frantic state. Behind him stood three heavily armed tactical officers securing the perimeter.
"Are you Maya Vance?" the agent asked, lowering his badge slightly.
"My name is Maya," she corrected firmly, not letting her guard down. "And I have the original hard-drive backups you’ve been trying to subpoena for the past six months."
The agent’s expression shifted from professional detachment to intense interest. He extended a hand. "Special Agent Vance—no relation to the target. I lead the White-Collar Crime Division’s asset forfeiture task force. You just handed us the missing puzzle piece we needed to take down the entire Vance network."
"It's not just financial fraud, Agent Vance," Maya said, handing over a small encrypted flash drive she had pulled from her inner pocket. "There's an active hit out on me. Marcus Thorne is inside the building, and he’s armed."
Agent Vance signaled two tactical officers, who immediately rushed past them into the diner’s emergency exit. "Secure the perimeter! Take Thorne alive!"
Maya watched the officers disappear into the shadows, feeling a momentary wave of relief wash over her. But as she turned to walk toward the ambulance idling at the mouth of the alley, her phone buzzed violently in her hand. It wasn't a notification from the live stream. It was an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.

She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the screen, before pressing accept and bringing the phone to her ear.
"It's a lovely night for a public execution, isn't it, Maya?" a distorted, electronic voice whispered through the speaker before the line clicked dead.
