Chapter 14: The Final Confrontation on the Trestle

The ocean wind whipped through Maya’s navy blazer as Marcus Thorne raised the rifle higher, locking the crosshairs onto her center mass. The train rocked violently from side to side as it screamed across the narrow steel trestle bridge, suspended hundreds of feet above the churning black waves of the Pacific trench.

"You're too late, Marcus!" Maya shouted back, her voice cutting through the mechanical roar. "The entire archive in this car is currently uploading to every major independent news server in the country via satellite relay!"

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the open boxcar door behind her. "You're lying! There's no signal out here on the bridge!"

"Check your secure comms channel," Maya taunted calmly, standing firm on the narrow metal threshold.

Marcus instinctively reached up to tap his ear-piece receiver, his attention wavering for one fatal moment. That split second was all Maya needed. She didn't wait for him to raise the rifle again. She lunged forward across the narrow coupling gap connecting the boxcar to the caboose, driving her shoulder directly into his chest.

The impact caught Marcus completely off guard. He stumbled backward against the railing, his rifle slipping from his grasp and tumbling down into the dark ocean below with a faint splash.

"You crazy bitch!" Marcus roared, grabbing Maya by the collar of her blazer and slamming her against the steel wall of the caboose.

Maya didn't panic. She brought her knee up with precise, calculated force, striking him square in the ribs where the fire extinguisher had already cracked his bone. Marcus gasped, his grip loosening as a wave of agonizing pain doubled him over.

Maya seized the opportunity. She grabbed his arm, twisted it behind his back, and shoved him hard against the open side gate of the caboose.

Just as Marcus tried to swing back around, the train hit a sharp transition track, jolting violently to the left. The sudden lurch sent Marcus stumbling over the edge of the unfenced platform. He grabbed frantically for the metal railing, his fingers slipping against the slick, salt-sprayed iron.

Maya stood at the edge, looking down at him as he dangled over the abyss, the dark ocean roaring below.

"Pull me up!" Marcus screamed, sheer terror replacing his ruthless exterior. "I'll give you Beatrice! I'll give you everything!"

Maya looked down at the micro-SD card safely tucked in her pocket, then slowly extended her hand toward him.
