Chapter 9 - The Sedan in the Driveway

The black luxury sedan idled quietly at the edge of the circular driveway, its exhaust forming small white clouds in the freezing autumn air. Inside the car, illuminated only by the faint glow of the dashboard instrumentation, Eleanor Vance sat upright against the leather upholstery, watching the side exit of the estate with predatory patience. She didn't roll down the window, but the message was crystal clear: she knew they were trying to leave, and she had them completely cornered.
Marcus instinctively stepped in front of Maya and the baby, his hand resting protectively over the door handle of their own parked SUV.
“Don't look at her, Maya. Just get into the back seat with Leo, and I’ll ram her car out of the way if I have to,” Marcus muttered, his jaw set as he unlocked the vehicle doors with a sharp beep.
Before Maya could slide into the back seat, the passenger door of the black sedan swung open, and a tall, sharp-featured man in a federal marshal’s windbreaker stepped out onto the gravel driveway.
“Marcus Vance? Maya Vance?” the marshal called out, flashing a metallic badge under the amber security lights. “We have an active federal warrant for your arrest, Maya, related to the 2019 Chicago financial embezzlement case.”
Maya froze, her breath catching in her throat as the cold metal of the threat closed in around her from every possible direction.
“This is insane! The case was dismissed and sealed years ago!” Marcus shouted, stepping aggressively between Maya and the federal agent. “Who the hell signed this warrant at this time of night?”
The marshal remained entirely unfazed, pulling a folded document from his leather portfolio and holding it up for them to see.
“The warrant was reissued an hour ago based on newly discovered physical evidence provided by the Vance Family Foundation,” the marshal replied smoothly, stepping closer with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. “Step away from Mrs. Vance, sir, or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice.”
Maya looked down at little Leo, who was sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the flashing red and blue lights that suddenly erupted from behind the trees as two more police cruisers blocked the driveway exit.
“Marcus, let them take me,” Maya whispered, tears streaming down her face as she handed the baby gently into her husband's shaking arms. “If you fight them now, they’ll charge you with harboring a fugitive and take Leo away from both of us.”
Marcus clutched the baby tightly against his chest, shaking his head violently as grief and fury warred within his chest.
“I’m coming with you,” Marcus declared, his voice ringing with absolute finality as the marshal grabbed Maya’s wrists and clicked the cold steel cuffs into place.

As the police cruiser doors slammed shut behind Maya, Eleanor rolled down the tinted window of the sedan, offering her son a cold, triumphant smile before the car drove off into the night.
