Chapter 12 - The Whisper in the Hallway

The echoing footsteps of the federal agents faded down the precinct hallway, accompanied by Eleanor’s muffled protests as she was led toward holding cell block B. Maya stood beside Marcus near the metal table, rubbing her bruised wrists while the lingering adrenaline slowly drained from her system. The precinct had quieted down into a tense, exhausted stillness, broken only by the steady hum of the backup generators overhead.

Marcus wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders, pulling her close as they prepared to walk out into the cool dawn air and reunite with baby Leo.

“Let’s go home, Maya,” Marcus said softly, his voice full of a quiet, hard-earned peace. “Julian is waiting at the estate with the baby, and we can finally start rebuilding our lives without her shadow hanging over us.”

Before they could take a step toward the exit, a tall, impeccably dressed man in a dark trench coat stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, blocking their path.

It wasn't a federal agent, and it wasn't one of Eleanor’s lawyers—it was Victor Sterling, the senior federal prosecutor who had supposedly been arrested for bribery an hour ago.

“Going somewhere so soon, Mr. and Mrs. Vance?” Victor asked, a thin, unsettling smile playing across his lips as he adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses.

Marcus instinctively stepped in front of Maya, his eyes narrowing with sudden suspicion as he recognized the powerful federal official.

“You were supposed to be in custody, Sterling,” Marcus said sharply. “Julian uploaded the files directly to your secure server to expose my mother’s entire network.”

Victor let out a low, smooth chuckle, pulling a thick Manila folder from beneath his arm and tapping it against his palm.

“Julian is a brilliant accountant, Mr. Vance, but he forgot one very important detail,” Victor replied, his tone chillingly casual. “The offshore accounts your mother used to funnel her money didn't belong to her foundation; they belonged to a federal counter-intelligence black budget fund.”

Maya felt the blood rush to her ears, the horrifying realization dawning on her with terrifying clarity.

“Eleanor wasn't just a corrupt matriarch, was she?” Maya whispered, staring at the prosecutor in utter disbelief. “She was laundering money for a federal operation.”

Victor nodded slowly, his smile vanishing as he locked eyes with them both.

“And now that she’s behind bars, someone has to take her place to keep the system running,” Victor said, sliding a blank federal employment contract across the table toward Marcus.
